Researcher

Jiaxin Shi

Jiaxin Shi is a machine-learning researcher whose work spans probabilistic inference, sequence modeling, and generative modeling. He earned computer science degrees at Tsinghua and worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Microsoft Research New England's Machine Learning and Statistics group. His 2022 work on variance-reduced gradient estimation won a NeurIPS Outstanding Paper Award; later papers introduced a multiresolution sequence model and a learned ordering for molecular generation. In 2026, he coauthored AlphaProtein Novo, a diffusion system for designing new-to-nature enzymes. As of October 2026, he is a research scientist at Meta SuperIntelligence Labs; he previously worked as a research scientist at Google DeepMind.

Timeline

  1. 2015–2020

    A Tsinghua computer science PhD

He earns a B.E. in Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University in 2015 and completes a Ph.D. in the same field in 2020 under Jun Zhu.

  2. 2021

    A Microsoft Research postdoc

In 2021, he works as a postdoctoral researcher in the Machine Learning and Statistics group at Microsoft Research New England. His research develops theory and scalable algorithms for inference in probabilistic machine learning.

  3. 2022

    A NeurIPS Outstanding Paper

In 2022, he coauthors Gradient Estimation with Discrete Stein Operators with Yuhao Zhou, Jessica Hwang, Michalis K. Titsias, and Lester W. Mackey. The paper uses discrete Stein operators to build variance reduction control variates for the REINFORCE leave-one-out estimator, and it wins a NeurIPS Outstanding Paper Award.

  4. 2023

    Multiresolution sequence modeling

In 2023, his ICML paper with Ke Alexander Wang and Emily B. Fox introduces MultiresLayer, a wavelet-inspired sequence-modeling block. Shared filters across dilated causal convolutions let it capture multiscale trends in sequential data.

  5. 2025

    Learning molecular generation order

In 2025, he coauthors Learning-Order Autoregressive Models with Application to Molecular Graph Generation. The model learns context-dependent generation orders and is evaluated on the QM9 and ZINC250k molecular-graph benchmarks.

  6. 2026

    AlphaProtein Novo enzyme design

In 2026, his work includes AlphaProtein Novo, a joint continuous and masked diffusion system for designing new-to-nature enzymes.

  7. 2026

Area chair at ICML and AISTATS

In 2026, he serves as an area chair for ICML and AISTATS.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research at Meta

As of October 2026, he is a research scientist at Meta SuperIntelligence Labs. He previously worked as a research scientist at Google DeepMind. His research interests include generative and algorithmic modeling, variational inference, sampling, gradient estimation, and score-based modeling.
