Jiangfeng Du

Also known as Du Jiangfeng, 杜江峰

Jiangfeng Du is a physicist whose research connects quantum computing, spin control, and AI-assisted magnetic-resonance analysis. Born in Wuxi in 1969, he entered USTC's School of the Gifted Young in 1985, completed a quantum-computation PhD in 2000, and held research posts at USTC and the National University of Singapore. He coauthored a 2002 quantum-game experiment on an NMR computer and a 2009 paper on electron-spin coherence; his work earned the second prize of China's 2012 National Natural Science Award, and he joined the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015. He served as USTC vice president in 2018, and in 2020 he coauthored a study that used deep learning to reconstruct a nanoscale NMR spectrum from 10% of sampled data; by 2023, he was president of Zhejiang University. The State Council appointed him vice minister of education in February 2025; he received the 2025 Zavoisky Award for spin-qubit magnetic-resonance spectroscopy and remains in the role as of October 2026.

Timeline

  1. 1969–2004

USTC degrees and early research posts

Born in Wuxi in 1969, he enters USTC's School of the Gifted Young in 1985 and earns bachelor's, master's and PhD degrees there. His quantum-computation PhD runs from 1997 to 2000; he serves as an associate professor in USTC's Department of Modern Physics from 2000 to 2004 and as a research fellow at National University of Singapore's Laboratory of Quantum Information from 2002 to 2003.

  2. 2002–2009

    Quantum games and spin coherence

In 2002, he coauthors an experiment that realizes a quantum game on a nuclear magnetic resonance quantum computer. In 2009, he coauthors a Nature paper titled “Preserving electron spin coherence in solids by optimal dynamical decoupling.”

  3. 2012

    A national science award

In 2012, his research achievements receive the second prize of China's National Natural Science Award.

  4. 2015

    Election to the CAS

In 2015, he becomes a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research covers experimental quantum physics and its applications.

  5. 2018–2020

    USTC leadership and AI-assisted NMR

In 2018, he serves as USTC vice president. In 2020, he coauthors a study that uses deep learning to reconstruct a two-dimensional nanoscale NMR spectrum from 10% of the data, shortening experimental time by an order of magnitude.

  6. 2023

    President of Zhejiang University

By August 2023, he is president of Zhejiang University and delivers a welcome address to the incoming class.

  7. 2025

    A Zavoisky Award

He receives the 2025 Zavoisky Award for achievements in spin-qubit magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

  8. Since February 2025

    Vice minister of education

The State Council appoints him vice minister of education in February 2025. He remains in the role as of October 2026.
