Jian Ho

Also known as J. Ho

Jian Ho is a computer vision researcher whose work addresses colour constancy and spectral reflectance. With Brian Funt, he presented “Color from Black and White” at the 1988 IEEE/CVF International Conference on Computer Vision, using chromatic aberration to extract the spectral power distribution of light, and shared the 1988 ICCV Marr Prize before the paper appeared in the International Journal of Computer Vision in June 1989. Collaborating with Funt and Mark Drew in 1990, he presented work on colour signal spectra at the CSCSI/SCEIO Conference in May 1990 and published a study on separating illumination from surface reflectance in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence in October 1990. The trio published “Color constancy from mutual reflection” in the International Journal of Computer Vision in April 1991, received US Patent 4,992,963 on determining ambient light and surface reflectance in 1991, and contributed to Physics-Based Vision: Principles and Practice in 1992.

Timeline

  1. 1988

    The ICCV Marr Prize

At the 1988 IEEE/CVF International Conference on Computer Vision, he and Brian Funt present “Color from Black and White,” which analyzes chromatic aberration in an image to extract the spectral power distribution of light for colour constancy. They share the 1988 ICCV Marr Prize for the work as the best paper on computational vision.

  2. June 1989

    Journal publication in IJCV

In June 1989, “Color from Black and White” by Funt and Ho appears in the International Journal of Computer Vision, volume 3, issue 2, as the 1988 Marr Prize paper.

  3. May 1990

    Colour signal spectra at CSCSI/SCEIO

With Brian Funt and Mark Drew, he presents “Obtaining Colour Signal Spectra for Colour Constancy” in the proceedings of the CSCSI/SCEIO Conference in May 1990.

  4. October 1990

    Separating light and reflectance

In October 1990, he coauthors “Separating a Color Signal into Illumination and Surface Reflectance Components: Theory and Applications” with Brian Funt and Mark Drew in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence.

  5. April 1991

    Mutual reflection in IJCV

He coauthors “Color constancy from mutual reflection” with Brian Funt and Mark Drew in the International Journal of Computer Vision in April 1991.

  6. 1991

    Ambient light and reflectance patent

Funt, Ho and Drew are named on US Patent 4,992,963, “Method and apparatus for determining ambient light and surface reflectance,” in 1991.

  7. 1992

    Physics-based vision book chapter

In 1992, Funt, Drew and Ho publish “Color constancy from mutual reflection” in Physics-Based Vision: Principles and Practice, edited by Healey, Schafer and Wolfe for Jones and Bartlett Publishers.
