Jerone Andrews

Jerone Andrews is a computer vision researcher at Sony AI whose work on dataset diversity and ethical data collection earned a Best Paper Award at ICML 2024. He studied mathematics at King's College London, completed an EPSRC-funded MRes and PhD in computer science at University College London, and held a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship before joining Sony AI, where he contributed to the Gastronomy and AI Ethics flagship projects. At Sony AI, he coauthored A View From Somewhere, a face similarity dataset presented at ICLR 2023, and led the NeurIPS 2023 oral paper "Ethical Considerations for Responsible Data Curation." With Dora Zhao, Orestis Papakyriakopoulos and Alice Xiang, he won the ICML 2024 award for "Position: Measure Dataset Diversity, Don't Just Claim It," and in 2025 he was among the Sony AI creators of the FHIBE fairness benchmark. He works at Sony AI and coauthored GenDataAgent, an ICLR 2026 paper on augmenting training datasets with synthetic data.

Timeline

  1. By 2021

    Mathematics and a UCL PhD

By 2021, he earns an MSci in Mathematics at King's College London, then an EPSRC-funded MRes and PhD in Computer Science at University College London, in its Vision & Imaging Science group. While at UCL, he spends time as a Visiting Researcher at the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo and at Telefónica Research in Barcelona. A Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship, a British Science Association Media Fellowship with BBC Future and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie RISE grant follow before he joins Sony.

  2. 2021

    Research scientist at Sony AI

In 2021, he is a Research Scientist at Sony AI, contributing to its Gastronomy and AI Ethics flagship projects, with expertise in computer vision and deep learning, in particular self-supervised anomaly detection, transfer learning and adversarial machine learning. In October 2021, he speaks on a UCL AI Centre Black History Month panel, "How to use AI to benefit the Black community," about biases in people-centric computer vision datasets.

  3. 2023

The A View From Somewhere dataset

In 2023, he coauthors A View From Somewhere (AVFS) with Alice Xiang, a dataset of 638,180 face similarity judgments over 4,921 faces, built to capture human diversity without semantic labels such as race, age or gender. The work is presented at the 2023 International Conference on Learning Representations.

  4. 2023

    Ethical data curation at NeurIPS

With Alice Xiang and contributions from the AI Ethics team at Sony AI, he leads the paper "Ethical Considerations for Responsible Data Curation," which offers recommendations for curating evaluation datasets in human-centric computer vision. He presents it as an oral at NeurIPS 2023.

  5. 2024

    An ICML Best Paper Award

In 2024, he wins a Best Paper Award at ICML with Dora Zhao, Orestis Papakyriakopoulos and Alice Xiang for "Position: Measure Dataset Diversity, Don't Just Claim It." The paper reviews 135 image and text datasets, proposes measurement theory as a framework for conceptualizing, operationalizing and evaluating diversity, and includes a case study of Meta's Segment Anything dataset, SA-1B.

  6. 2025

    The FHIBE fairness benchmark

In 2025, he is among the Sony AI creators of the Fair Human-Centric Image Benchmark (FHIBE), and one of the reviewers of its datasheet. FHIBE is a publicly available fairness benchmark with informed consent, licensing and compensation, created to evaluate fairness and robustness in human-centric computer vision applications.

  7. 2026

    GenDataAgent at ICLR 2026

In 2026, he coauthors GenDataAgent at ICLR with Zhiteng Li, Lele Chen, Yunhao Ba, Yulun Zhang and Alice Xiang. The paper proposes a generative agent that augments training datasets with synthetic data for model fine-tuning.
