Jean-Pierre Laurent
Also known as Jean-Pierre H. Laurent
Jean-Pierre Laurent's AI work linked heuristic programs for mathematical limits with expert systems and knowledge-system validation. He published DALI, a program for evaluating indeterminate forms when calculating limits, in 1973 and coauthored LAURA, a system for debugging student programs, in 1980. In 1984, he wrote about control structures in expert systems and presented CESSOL for geotechnical surveys with Ayel and Soutif; in 1986, he edited an AI volume. By 1989, he was a professor of informatics and artificial intelligence at the Université de Savoie and IJCAI-93's Local Arrangements Chair; in 1991, he co-edited a book on knowledge-based system validation with Marc Ayel. He served as EurAI president from 1994 to 1995, supervised Jean-Philippe Robles's 1995 doctorate, and is a current EurAI Fellow affiliated with the Université de Savoie.
Timeline
-
1973–1980
DALI and LAURA programs
In 1973, he publishes DALI, a program that computes limits by using heuristics to evaluate indeterminate forms. In 1980, he coauthors LAURA with Anne Adam, a system for debugging student programs.
-
1984
Control structures in expert systems
In September 1984, he describes an expert system as software that uses domain knowledge, with a distinct separation between that knowledge and the procedures that use it.
-
1984
CESSOL for geotechnical surveys
With M. Ayel and M. Soutif, he presents CESSOL at AFCET's fourth RF-IA congress in Paris in 1984, a system for defining geotechnical soil-survey campaigns.
-
1986
Editing an AI anthology
In 1986, he edits the volume Journées nationales sur l'intelligence artificielle.
-
1989–1993
Professor and IJCAI-93 chair
In 1989, he is a professor of informatics and artificial intelligence at the Université de Savoie. In March 1989, IJCAI trustees announce him as Local Arrangements Chair for IJCAI-93, which is scheduled for August and September 1993 in Chambéry. In October 1992, he sends a reminder of the paper deadline from LIA-ESIGEC at the Université de Savoie in Le Bourget-du-Lac.
-
1991
Validation of knowledge systems
With Marc Ayel, he edits Validation, verification, and test of knowledge-based systems, a Wiley book published in 1991 from a European workshop held during the 1990 ECAI conference in Stockholm.
-
1994–1995
EurAI president and research mentor
From 1994 to 1995, he serves as EurAI president. In 1995, Jean-Philippe Robles completes an applied-sciences doctorate at Chambéry under Laurent's direction, on approximate models and qualitative methods for supervising dynamic processes.
-
As of October 2026
Current EurAI fellowship
As of October 2026, he is a current EurAI Fellow with the Université de Savoie as his institution. EurAI's Fellows Program honors up to 3% of the total membership of its member societies.
