Jaydev P. Desai

Also known as Jaydev Prataprai Desai

Jaydev Desai is a biomedical engineer whose research applies robotics to surgery. He completed undergraduate studies at IIT Bombay and earned graduate degrees at the University of Pennsylvania before postdoctoral research at Harvard and an associate professorship at Drexel. He joined Maryland in 2006 and Georgia Tech in 2016, where he published work on steerable guidewires and led development of the university's first undergraduate AI minor. In 2026, he joined the National Academy of Inventors as a senior member; as of October 2026, he is a Georgia Tech professor and director of the Georgia Center for Medical Robotics.

Timeline

  1. 1993–1998

    Engineering and mathematics degrees

He completes undergraduate studies at IIT Bombay in 1993. At the University of Pennsylvania, he earns an M.S. in 1995, an M.A. in mathematics in 1997, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and applied mechanics in 1998.

  2. 2002

    Mobile robot formations

He publishes a graph theoretic approach to modeling mobile robot team formations in the Journal of Robotic Systems in 2002.

  3. By 2006

    From Harvard to Maryland

By 2006, he has completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Harvard's Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences and serves as an associate professor at Drexel, where he directs the PRISM Laboratory. In October 2006, he joins the University of Maryland's Department of Mechanical Engineering.

  4. 2012–2013

    A brain surgery robot

In 2012, he and colleagues from the University of Maryland, Baltimore win a $2 million NIH grant to continue developing a small robot to help remove difficult-to-reach brain tumors. Maryland promotes him to full professor of mechanical engineering in 2013.

  5. 2016–2025

    A guidewire paper

In August 2016, he joins Georgia Tech's Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. His 2025 publication list includes his paper on current trends and future directions for robotically steerable guidewires.

  6. 2025

    An undergraduate AI minor

In 2025, as associate chair for undergraduate studies, he leads development of Georgia Tech's first undergraduate minor in artificial intelligence.
