James Bellingham

Also known as Jim Bellingham, James G. Bellingham

James Bellingham is an American roboticist and ocean engineer who develops autonomous underwater vehicles and leads work on assured AI and autonomous systems at Johns Hopkins University. After three physics degrees at MIT, he founded the MIT Sea Grant AUV Laboratory, whose Odyssey vehicle went to Antarctica in 1992, and co-founded Bluefin Robotics in 1997. He went on to serve as director of engineering and chief technologist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and in 2014 he became the first director of the Center for Marine Robotics at Woods Hole. Since 2021, he has been executive director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Assured Autonomy; he was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2021 and received a lifetime achievement award at the IEEE OES AUV symposium in 2026. Bellingham is also Director of Research, Safety and Assurance at the Johns Hopkins Data Science and AI Institute.

Timeline

  1. 1984–1988

    Physics degrees at MIT

He earns three physics degrees at MIT: a bachelor's, a master's in 1984 and a PhD in 1988, with a thesis on the magnetic detection of electrochemical reactions under advisor Margaret MacVicar. As a graduate student in the 1980s, he joins Harold "Doc" Edgerton on his boat in Boston Harbor and gets hooked on autonomous underwater vehicles.

  2. 1989–1999

The AUV Lab and Bluefin Robotics

He founds the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Laboratory at MIT Sea Grant and manages it from 1989 to 1999. His team tests its first vehicle, Sea Squirt, in the Charles River in 1989, then builds Odyssey, rated to 6,000 meters, and takes it to Antarctica in 1992. In 1997, he co-founds Bluefin Robotics, a startup that licenses the lab's technology, and nearly his entire MIT team joins him.

  3. 1999–2014

    Engineering at MBARI

In 1999, he joins the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute as director of engineering and later becomes chief technologist. There he oversees the Monterey Accelerated Research System, a seafloor instrument array cabled 52 kilometers to shore, and fosters the Tethys long-range AUV. From 2008 to 2013, he chairs the Naval Research Advisory Committee.

  4. 2014–2021

    Marine robotics at Woods Hole

In July 2014, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution names him the first director of its Center for Marine Robotics. At Woods Hole, he creates the DunkWorks design and prototyping center, starts an Arctic Long-Range AUV program for oil-spill response, and organizes the Ocean Worlds Catalyst program with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

  5. 2021

    The Institute for Assured Autonomy

In May 2021, he becomes executive director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Assured Autonomy, which the university set up in 2020 with $30 million as a national center for assured AI and autonomous systems. He is inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in October 2021, and in November 2021 Johns Hopkins names him a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Exploration Robotics.

  6. 2025

    A book on marine robots

In August 2025, he and Claudia Geib introduce How Are Marine Robots Shaping Our Future?, a 2025 book on how autonomous underwater vehicles serve climate science, offshore energy, aquaculture and archaeology, and may one day explore Europa and Enceladus.

  7. 2026

    A lifetime achievement award

In 2026, he receives the Lifetime Achievement Award at the gala dinner of the IEEE OES Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Symposium, held aboard HMS Warrior.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research, safety and assurance director

He is executive director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Assured Autonomy and Director of Research, Safety and Assurance at the Data Science and AI Institute. His work includes AUV autonomy architectures that let vehicles make decisions and adapt to environmental conditions, and he is interested in the ethical dimensions of autonomous systems.
