Researcher

Isabel Ribeiro

Isabel Ribeiro is a mobile robotics researcher whose work linked factory transport vehicles with remote-handling robots for ITER's fusion reactor. She studied electrical engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, earned her doctorate in 1988, and shifted her research to mobile robotics. She led the Institute for Systems and Robotics' terrestrial mobile robotics group, with research on navigation, localization, path planning, and cooperative robotics. She is a Distinguished Professor at Técnico and a researcher at ISR-Lisbon. Since December 2025, she chairs Técnico's Research and Teaching Assessment Council, and she became a permanent member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon in July 2026.

Timeline

  1. 1972–1988

    Studying at Técnico

She enters Instituto Superior Técnico in 1972 and earns a degree in electrical engineering, specializing in telecommunications and electronics, in 1978. She completes master's and doctoral degrees in electrical and computer engineering there in 1983 and 1988.

  2. 1988

    Turning to mobile robotics

After her doctorate in 1988, she redirects her research to mobile robotics, a field then unstudied in Portugal.

  3. 1991–1992

    Four Efacec guided vehicles

She and a group of students and Efacec engineers develop and install four automated guided vehicles for a transformer factory, Portugal's first system of its kind. The vehicles carry pallets through the factory and stop with precision below one centimeter.

  4. 1993–2010

    Leading terrestrial mobile robotics

She proposes the Institute for Systems and Robotics' application to the Ciência programme and leads its Terrestrial Mobile Robotics group from the institute's creation in 1993 through 2010. Her research covers mobile robot navigation, localization, path planning, cooperative robotics, and 2D and 3D environment reconstruction using sonar and laser.

  5. 1990s

    ITER's mobile vehicle concept

At the end of the 1990s, she and a Técnico team propose an alternative design for mobile vehicles that handle materials inside ITER's Tokamak building. ITER selects the concept after rejecting a Japanese team's proposal, and the design guides later development.

  6. 2018–2026

    Distinguished Professor

In 2018, IST names her a Distinguished Professor for her contributions to mobile robotics. By January 2026, she is a retired professor at Técnico and a researcher at ISR-Lisbon.

  7. Since December 2025

    Assessment council chair

She chairs Técnico's Research and Teaching Assessment Council, which begins its third review cycle at its first meeting in December 2025 and serves a four-year term. In July 2026, she is elected a permanent member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon's 8th Section for Information Sciences and Technologies.
