Ioannis Patras
Also known as Yiannis Patras
Ioannis Patras is a computer vision researcher whose work spans motion segmentation, affect analysis and multimodal AI. He earned computer science degrees at the University of Crete and Delft, then held research and academic roles at the University of Amsterdam and the University of York before becoming a professor at Queen Mary. He coauthored the AMIGOS dataset for affect, personality and mood research, presented deep-learning work on video and facial image generation in May 2022, and joined ELLIS as a Fellow in December 2024. As of October 2026, he is Head of Research at Tavus and leads Queen Mary's Centre for Multimodal AI and Computing.
Timeline
-
1998
Motion estimation by watershed
In 1998, he coauthors “Iterative motion estimation - segmentation method using watershed segments” with E. A. Hendriks and R. L. Lagendijk for the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing.
-
2017
The AMIGOS affect dataset
He coauthors AMIGOS in 2017, a publicly available dataset for multimodal study of affect, personality traits and mood in individuals and groups. The study combines physiological signals with face and body video from individual and group viewing sessions.
-
May 2022
Deep learning for visual data
In May 2022, he presents deep-learning work on video retrieval, few-shot action recognition and affect recognition, and discusses controllable facial image generation through GAN latent spaces.
-
February 2023
Professor at Queen Mary
In February 2023, he is Professor of Computer Vision and Human Sensing and Director of Research Graduate Studies in Queen Mary's School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. Before Queen Mary, he holds research and academic positions at the University of Amsterdam and the University of York. He earns a BSc and MSc in computer science at the University of Crete and a PhD at Delft University of Technology.
-
December 2024
An ELLIS Fellowship
In December 2024, he joins ELLIS as a Fellow, with Queen Mary University of London as his affiliation.
-
As of October 2026
Head of research at Tavus
As of October 2026, he is Head of Research at Tavus and coauthors Griffin, a model designed to understand and generate real-time, face-to-face human interaction. He is also a Professor of Computer Vision and Human Sensing and head of Queen Mary's Centre for Multimodal AI and Computing.
