Researcher

Igor L. Markov

Igor Markov is a researcher whose work links optimization, machine learning, and chip design. He earned a doctorate at UCLA in 2001, served as a professor at the University of Michigan, and became an IEEE Fellow in 2013. At Google, he rewrote a Search algorithm for trivial queries; at Meta, he coauthored Looper, an ML platform for product decisions. At Synopsys, he led the AI Disruption Task Force and, in October 2025, became vice chair of an LLM benchmarking coalition for silicon design. As of October 2026, he is a Distinguished Research Scientist at NVIDIA.

Timeline

  1. 2001

    A UCLA doctorate

In 2001, he earns a doctorate in computer science at UCLA under adviser Andrew Byun Kahng. His dissertation is titled “Top-Down Timing-Driven Placement with Direct Minimization of Maximal Signal Delay.”

  2. 2013

    An IEEE Fellowship

In 2013, he becomes an IEEE Fellow for contributions to optimization methods in electronic design automation.

  3. 2014

    Rewriting Google Search

In 2014, he joins Google's Search team and rewrites its trivial-query detector, reducing worst-case time complexity from exponential to linear.

  4. 2021–2022

    Looper at Meta

In 2021, he coauthors Looper, an end-to-end ML platform with simple APIs for decision-making and feedback collection. In April 2022, he presents the platform as a Research Scientist at Meta; he previously serves as a professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan.

  5. October 2025

    Vice chair of LLM coalition

In October 2025, Si2 elects him vice chair of its Large Language Model Benchmarking Coalition, an industry initiative advancing AI for silicon design and verification. He leads Synopsys's AI Disruption Task Force.

  6. July 2026

    Joining the CCC Council

In July 2026, he joins the Computing Community Consortium Council and calls for coordination across education, research, and industry to support computing hardware and AI applications.

  7. As of October 2026

    Distinguished Research Scientist

As of October 2026, he is a Distinguished Research Scientist at NVIDIA.
