Ichiro Matsuda

Also known as 松田 一朗

Ichiro Matsuda is an image-coding researcher at Tokyo University of Science whose lossless compression work spans minimum-rate predictors, cellular neural network coders and CNN-based probability models. He earned his degrees there in 1991 and 1996, joined the Faculty of Science and Technology as a research associate in 1996, and became a professor in 2014. From 2018 to 2021 he was General Chair of PCSJ/IMPS, and in 2024 he was named a Fellow of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers for his lossless image compression algorithms. Since April 2026, he is a professor in the Department of Information Science and Technology, and his 2026 papers include work on generating segmentation masks with conditional discrete flow matching.

  1. 1991–1996

Degrees from Tokyo University of Science

In 1991, he graduates in electrical engineering from the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Tokyo University of Science. He completes a doctorate in electrical engineering at the university's Graduate School, Division of Science and Engineering, in 1996.

  2. 1996–2003

    Research associate in image coding

He joins the Faculty of Science and Technology at Tokyo University of Science as a research associate in 1996 and works on image coding and processing. From 2000 to 2001, he is principal investigator of a Grant-in-Aid for Encouragement of Young Scientists project on lossless compression of image data with predictors that minimize the coding rate. His lab offers Lossless Image Coding Using Minimum-Rate Predictors as open source.

  3. 2003–2011

    Lecturer, then associate professor

In 2003, he becomes a lecturer in the Faculty of Science and Technology. He and Susumu Itoh receive the Fujio Frontier Award of the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers in 2006 for research and development of ultra-high-efficiency lossless coding of digital images. He becomes an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering in April 2008, and in 2011 he coauthors the paper "Lossless Image Coding by Cellular Neural Networks with Minimum Coding Rate Learning".

  4. 2014–2019

    Professor and probability modeling

He becomes a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tokyo University of Science in April 2014. From 2017 to 2019, he is principal investigator of the Grant-in-Aid project Learning Based Probability Modeling for Efficient Image Coding. In 2018, he publishes "A Lossless Image Coding Method Based on Probability Model Optimization" at EUSIPCO with Tomokazu Ishikawa, Yusuke Kameda and Susumu Itoh.

  5. 2018–2021

PCSJ/IMPS chair and a paper award

From November 2018 to November 2021, he is General Chair of PCSJ/IMPS, a pair of image coding and media processing symposia run by the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers. In 2021, the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers gives its Niwa-Takayanagi Paper Award to a paper he coauthors on lossless color image coding with probability model optimization, example search and adaptive prediction.

  6. 2021–2022

    CNN-based lossless image coding

The IWAIT Best Paper Award of 2021 goes to "Probability Model Adjustment for the CNN-based Lossless Image Coding Method", written by Hiroki Kojima, Yusuke Kameda, Yasuyo Kita, Ichiro Matsuda and Susumu Itoh. In 2022, he coauthors "Enhancement of CNN-based Probability Modeling by Locally Trained Adaptive Prediction for Efficient Lossless Image Coding" at the Picture Coding Symposium.

  7. 2024

    Named an IEICE Fellow

In 2024, he is named a Fellow of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers for research and development of lossless image compression algorithms. His paper with Haruka Sugiyama and Kaiyu Suzuki on lossless image compression using bits-back coding with a latent variable model wins the IWAIT 2024 Best Paper Award.

  8. Since April 2026

Professor of information science and technology

He moves to the Department of Information Science and Technology in the Faculty of Information Science and Technology at Tokyo University of Science as a professor in April 2026. In January 2026, he coauthors "Generation of Semantic Segmentation Masks Based on Conditional Discrete Flow Matching" at IWAIT 2026 with Masahiro Fujioka and Kaiyu Suzuki.
