Ian T. Young

Also known as Ian Theodore Young, Ted Young

Ian T. Young is a professor emeritus at TU Delft whom the International Association for Pattern Recognition named a Fellow in 2000 for contributions to image analysis and pattern recognition. Born in Chicago in 1943, he wrote a 1969 MIT dissertation on automated leukocyte recognition, taught at MIT from 1967 and became a group leader at LLNL in 1978. After joining TU Delft as Professor of Applied Physics in 1981, he wrote the 1983 textbook Signals and Systems with Alan Oppenheim and Alan Willsky, published a recursive Gaussian filter with Lucas van Vliet in 1995, chaired three departments and became a Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion in 2006. Cytometry is a second thread: he sat on the first council of a new society for analytical cytology, now ISAC, whose bylaws took effect in early 1979, and ISAC gave him its Distinguished Service Award in 2002 and its Fulwyler Award for Innovative Excellence in 2008.

Timeline

  1. 1943–1969

    MIT degrees and leukocyte recognition

He is born in Chicago in 1943 and earns SB and SM degrees at MIT in 1966. In 1969, he completes an MIT PhD with the dissertation Automated Leukocyte Recognition, advised by Murray Eden.

  2. 1967–1979

    Faculty member at MIT

MIT appoints him an instructor in 1967, an assistant professor in 1969 and an associate professor in 1973. From September 1975 to June 1976, he is a visiting professor in TU Delft's departments of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics.

  3. 1978–1981

    Group leader at LLNL

In 1978, he becomes a group leader at LLNL, a post he holds until December 1981. He also sits on the first council of a new society for analytical cytology, whose constitution and bylaws become official in early 1979.

  4. 1981–1983

Professor of Applied Physics at Delft

In December 1981, he becomes Professor of Applied Physics at TU Delft. Prentice-Hall publishes the textbook Signals and Systems by Alan V. Oppenheim and Alan S. Willsky with Ian T. Young in 1983.

  5. 1995

    A recursive Gaussian filter

In 1995, he and Lucas J. van Vliet publish a recursive implementation of the Gaussian filter, which runs a third-order filter with one real pole and a pair of complex poles forward and backward to approximate the Gaussian at low computational cost for any smoothing scale. TU Delft's Pattern Recognition Group publishes his Fundamentals of Image Processing in 1995.

  6. 1998–2002

    Department chair and IAPR Fellow

He chairs TU Delft's Department of Applied Physics from 1998 to 2002 and receives the TU Delft Leermeester Prize in 1999. The International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow in 2000 for contributions to image analysis and pattern recognition. In 2002, the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry gives him its Distinguished Service Award.

  7. 2002–2012

    Medical Delta and a knighthood

From 2002 to 2008, he chairs TU Delft's Department of Imaging Science & Technology, and he chairs Medical Delta from 2005 to 2012. He becomes a Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion in 2006 and wins ISAC's Fulwyler Award for Innovative Excellence in 2008.

  8. Since December 2008

    Emeritus professor at Delft

He becomes Professor of Applied Physics, Emeritus, at TU Delft in December 2008 and gives his valedictory speech, Failure in Education, in May 2009. In 2013, he chairs the university's Department of Bionanoscience.
