Iain A. Matthews
Also known as I Matthews, I. Matthews, I.A. Matthews, Iain Matthews
Iain A. Matthews is a computer vision researcher whose work connects machine learning with digital faces, speech, and gesture. He earned an electronic-engineering BEng and a computer-vision PhD at the University of East Anglia, then worked on facial tracking at Carnegie Mellon and Weta Digital's FACETS system for Avatar and Tintin. At Disney Research, he coauthored deep-learning work on speech animation, and FACETS earned him the 2017 Academy Scientific and Technical Award for Technical Achievement. His later work includes Llama2-driven gesture generation and xADA, a speech-driven animation model for MetaHuman; he is courtesy faculty at Carnegie Mellon and an honorary professor at UEA.
Timeline
-
1994–1998
A computer vision PhD
He earns a BEng in electronic engineering in 1994 and completes a PhD in computer vision at the University of East Anglia in 1998.
-
2006–2008
Weta Digital and FACETS
Before Weta, he works as a postdoctoral researcher and faculty member at Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute, studying face modeling and vision-based tracking. In 2006, he joins Weta Digital and spends two years helping develop the FACETS facial motion capture system for Avatar and Tintin.
-
2008
Joining Disney Research
In 2008, he joins Disney Research Pittsburgh as a senior research scientist. He later serves as Associate Director of Disney Research Pittsburgh.
-
2017
A technical Academy Award
He shares the 2017 Academy Scientific and Technical Award for Technical Achievement with Luca Fascione and J.P. Lewis for developing FACETS at Weta Digital.
-
2017
Deep learning for speech animation
He coauthors a 2017 SIGGRAPH paper that uses phoneme sequences and a sliding-window predictor to create speech-synchronized mouth animation. The approach generates animation from speech in real time.
-
2024
Llama2 gesture generation
In December 2024, he coauthors LLAniMAtion, a study of Llama2 language-model features for gesture generation. Its model can generate beat and semantic gestures without audio input.
-
2025
xADA for MetaHuman animation
At SIGGRAPH 2025, he coauthors xADA, a generative model that creates face, tongue and head animation directly from speech audio and maps it to MetaHuman rig controls.
-
As of October 2026
Academic appointments
He is courtesy faculty in Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute and an honorary professor in UEA's School of Computer Science; he is a former Director of Research Science at Epic Games.
