Hung-yi Lee

Also known as 李宏毅, Lee Hung-yi

Hung-yi Lee is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at National Taiwan University whose research centers on speech processing and self-supervised learning. After earning his Ph.D. at NTU in 2012, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Academia Sinica and a visiting scientist in the Spoken Language Systems Group at MIT CSAIL. In 2021, he and colleagues introduced SUPERB, a leaderboard and toolkit for testing shared speech models across many tasks, and the International Speech Communication Association elected him a Fellow in 2025. His Mandarin deep learning lectures passed 4 million YouTube views by 2019, and his channel now has over 350,000 subscribers.

Timeline

  1. 2008–2012

    Degrees at National Taiwan University

He earns a B.S. at National Taiwan University in 2008, then an M.S. in 2010 and a Ph.D. in 2012 from NTU's Graduate Institute of Communication Engineering. His dissertation, "Spoken Content Retrieval – Relevance Feedback, Graphs and Semantics," receives the Distinguished Ph.D. Dissertation Award of the Association for Computational Linguistics and Chinese Language Processing in September 2012.

  2. 2012–2014

    Academia Sinica and MIT CSAIL

From September 2012 to August 2013, he is a postdoctoral fellow at the Research Center for Information Technology Innovation of Academia Sinica. From September 2013 to July 2014, he works as a visiting scientist in the Spoken Language Systems Group of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

  3. 2016–2019

    Deep learning lectures in Mandarin

In 2016 and 2017, he gives "Understanding Deep Learning in One Day," the first deep learning open course in Taiwan, and in August 2017 he presents "Understanding GAN in One Day," the first open course on GANs in Mandarin. By October 2019, his YouTube channel of two NTU courses taught in Mandarin has more than 4 million views and 48,000 subscribers.

  4. 2018–2020

    Teaching and research awards

In 2018, NTU gives him its Distinguished Teaching Award, and a paper he coauthors wins a Best Student Paper Award at the 19th annual conference of the International Speech Communication Association. He receives the Ta-You Wu Memorial Award from Taiwan's Ministry of Science and Technology in 2019 and an AWS ML Research Award in 2020.

  5. 2020–2022

    The SUPERB benchmark

He co-organizes the special session "New Trends in self-supervised speech processing" at Interspeech 2020 and the NeurIPS 2020 workshop "Self-Supervised Learning for Speech and Audio Processing." In May 2021, with Shu-wen Yang, Shinji Watanabe, Abdelrahman Mohamed and others, he introduces SUPERB, a leaderboard and toolkit that benchmarks one shared model across a wide range of speech processing tasks. In 2022, he coauthors "Self-Supervised Speech Representation Learning: A Review" and co-presents a NAACL 2022 tutorial on self-supervised representation learning for speech processing.

  6. 2023–2024

    Teaching generative AI at NTU

In September 2023, he visits the University of Bremen and gives a talk titled "Towards a Speech Version of ChatGPT." In spring 2024, he teaches NTU's new course "Introduction to Generative AI," which is open to students of the College of Liberal Arts, requires no prior knowledge of machine learning and uses AI to help grade assignments.

  7. 2025

    An ISCA Fellowship

The International Speech Communication Association elects him an ISCA Fellow in April 2025 for contributions to speech self-supervised learning and for establishing community benchmarks that evaluate speech SSL technologies.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at National Taiwan University

He is a professor in NTU's Department of Electrical Engineering, with a joint appointment in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, and a member of the university's AI Center of Research Excellence. He serves on the ISCA Board and teaches NTU's Machine Learning course in spring 2026. His deep learning YouTube channel has over 350,000 subscribers.
