Hugh H. T. Liu

Also known as Hugh H.T. Liu, Hugh Liu

Hugh Liu is an aerospace researcher whose work links flight control, autonomous aerial systems, and coordinated vehicles. He earned degrees in Shanghai and Beijing and a PhD in Toronto before joining the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) in 2000. His research includes UAV formation flight, intelligent aerial systems for transport, and motion planning for autonomous agents; in 2015, he received an NSERC grant to train 150 students and by May 2015 he had helped create Arrowonics Technologies. He received the CASI McCurdy Award in 2021 and became a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 2022. He was scheduled to speak on learning-enhanced UAV control at the 2025 International Low-Altitude Economy Summit; as of October 2026, he is a UTIAS professor and director of the Centre for Aerial Robotics Research and Education (CARRE).
