Harry Wechsler
Harry Wechsler is a computer vision researcher whose work includes face recognition, biometrics, and pattern recognition. He earned a computer science PhD from UC Irvine in 1975 and published Computational Vision in 1990. The FERET program began in 1993, and Wechsler was selected to direct collection of its facial-image database with Jonathon Phillips; he directed a NATO face-recognition institute in 1997 and became an IAPR Fellow in 1998. He published Reliable Face Recognition Methods in 2007 and presented recognition-by-parts work using boosting and transduction in 2010. By 2011, he was a professor and director of George Mason's Center of Distributed and Intelligent Computation; he is now Professor Emeritus of computer science there.
Timeline
-
1975
A computer science PhD
He earns a PhD in computer science from the University of California, Irvine, in 1975.
-
1990
Computational Vision
He publishes the book Computational Vision in 1990.
-
1993–1996
The FERET face database
The FERET program begins in September 1993 to develop automatic face-recognition algorithms. Wechsler is selected to direct collection of its facial-image database with Jonathon Phillips; 15 collection sessions run from August 1993 through July 1996.
-
1997
Directing a face-recognition institute
He directs the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Face Recognition: From Theory to Applications in Stirling in 1997.
-
1998
An IAPR fellowship
IAPR names him a Fellow in 1998 for his contributions to computer vision and pattern recognition and his service to the association.
-
2007
Reliable Face Recognition Methods
He publishes Reliable Face Recognition Methods in 2007, a book on face recognition, pattern recognition, and biometrics.
-
2010
Recognition by parts
He presents a face-recognition architecture called recognition-by-parts in 2010. It combines perception, learning, and decision-making through boosting and transduction.
-
As of October 2026
Center director and professor emeritus
By 2011, he is a professor of computer science and director of George Mason University's Center of Distributed and Intelligent Computation. As of October 2026, he is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the university.
