Researcher

Hamish Ivison

Hamish Ivison is a language-model researcher whose work spans open models and post-training methods. At the University of Sydney, they studied Arts and IT before working on Ai2’s AllenNLP team and completing Ai2’s predoctoral program; they began a University of Washington PhD in 2023. Across open language-model projects, they coauthored Tülu 2, OLMo, Tülu 3, OLMo 3, and TESS 2, then coauthored Tmax, an open reinforcement-learning recipe for terminal agents. As of October 2026, they are a PhD student in UW’s H2Lab and a part-time researcher at FAIR under Mike Lewis.

Timeline

  1. By 2023

From Sydney to a UW PhD

At the University of Sydney, they earn degrees in Arts and IT, with majors in Linguistics, Classical Greek, and Computer Science. Before their PhD, they work as a predoctoral researcher on Ai2’s AllenNLP team, complete Ai2’s Predoctoral Young Investigators program, and become a PhD student at the University of Washington in 2023.

  2. 2023

    Tülu 2 adaptation work

In 2023, they coauthor work on Tülu 2, which releases instruction datasets, fine-tuned Llama 2 models, and code for open adaptation of language models.

  3. 2024

    OLMo and open language research

OLMo is a 2024 project they coauthor: a competitive open language model built for scientific study and released with open training data, training code, and evaluation code.

  4. 2024

    Tülu 3 post-training

Tülu 3 is another 2024 project they coauthor, an open family of post-trained models released with data, code, and training recipes. Its training methods include supervised fine-tuning, direct preference optimization, and reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards.

  5. 2025

    OLMo 3 and TESS 2

OLMo 3 is a fully open family of 7B and 32B models they coauthor in 2025; they also coauthor TESS 2, an instruction-following diffusion language model. The OLMo 3 release includes each stage, checkpoint, data point, and dependency used to build the models.

  6. 2025

    PhD research at UW

A third-year PhD student at UW in 2025, they focus on post-training methods for language models, particularly data selection and reinforcement learning.

  7. 2026

    Tmax for terminal agents

Tmax extends their 2026 research to terminal agents: they coauthor an open reinforcement-learning recipe and release a terminal dataset, open-weight models, and code for future research.

  8. As of October 2026

    FAIR research and context models

At the University of Washington’s H2Lab, they are a PhD student and a part-time researcher at FAIR under Mike Lewis. In 2026, they coauthor Context Language Models, which lets language models manage context by making unrestricted updates to a file.
