Researcher

Gyula Mester

Gyula Mester is a robotics researcher whose work uses fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, and sensors to control autonomous robots. He earned an engineering D.Sc. from the University of Novi Sad in 1977, moved to the University of Szeged in 2000, and became a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Engineering in 2013. His papers studied mobile robot navigation with sensor feedback and genetic algorithm design of fuzzy controllers; in 2024, he wrote about EURGAI's applied AI research and presented the group's work at a conference. As of October 2026, he is a professor at the University of Szeged and teaches intelligent robotics at Óbuda University.

Timeline

  1. 1945–1977

    Engineering degree and first post

Born in 1945, he earns a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Belgrade in 1970, becomes a lecturer at Subotica Technical College in 1974, and earns a D.Sc. in Engineering from the University of Novi Sad in 1977.

  2. 1979–2000

Novi Sad professorship and Szeged move

He becomes an associate professor at the University of Novi Sad in 1979 and a professor there in 1988. In 2000, he moves to the University of Szeged's Faculty of Engineering and Laboratory of Robotics.

  3. 2010

    Sensor based mobile robot navigation

In 2010, he coauthors a paper on intelligent mobile robot navigation in unknown environments. It describes fuzzy control for autonomous robot motion around obstacles.

  4. 2013

    Full member of engineering academy

In 2013, he becomes a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Engineering.

  5. 2014

    Genetic algorithms for fuzzy control

In 2014, he publishes a paper on designing fuzzy control systems for intelligent robots with genetic algorithms.

  6. 2016

    Honorary professor at Szeged

The University of Szeged gives him the title of honorary professor in 2016.

  7. 2024

    EURGAI and applied AI

He publishes the editorial “Applied Artificial Intelligence” in 2024, where he describes EURGAI's work in theoretical and applied AI and its organization of ISCAAI's first conference in Szeged in May 2024. At TREND 2024, he and Igor Pisarov present a poster on EURGAI, with Mester affiliated with the University of Szeged's Faculty of Engineering.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor and robotics educator

He is a full professor in the University of Szeged's Faculty of Engineering, with work in artificial intelligence, robotics, self-driving cars, flying cars, and scientometrics. He teaches Intelligent Robots and collision-free control of autonomous robot helicopters at Óbuda University's Doctoral School of Safety and Security Sciences. In June 2025, he serves on IcETRAN's International Scientific Committee; in 2026, he serves on CANDO-EPE's International Scientific Committee.
