Researcher

Gladstone Alexander Butler

Also known as Gladstone Deluxe, Gladstone Butler

Gladstone Alexander Butler is a researcher and composer whose neural audio work turns mono speech into binaural sound shaped by the listener's position. In 2021, he coauthored two papers on neural binaural synthesis and HRTF modeling and shared an ICLR Outstanding Paper Award for the speech paper. As Gladstone Deluxe, he works with percussion and electronics, creating recorded music, installations, and performances, and he composes for Princeton Sound Kitchen. As of October 2026, he is a PhD candidate in music composition at Princeton; he holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon and an MFA from Columbia.

Timeline

  1. 2018

    Snoozefest at Carnegie Mellon

In 2018, he is a College of Fine Arts senior at Carnegie Mellon and works behind the scenes at Snoozefest with Alexander Panos. He is also known as Gladstone Deluxe.

  2. 2021

An ICLR award for binaural speech

In 2021, he coauthors Neural Synthesis of Binaural Speech from Mono Audio, whose neural renderer converts single-channel audio into two-channel binaural sound conditioned on the listener's relative position and orientation to the source. He shares an ICLR Outstanding Paper Award for the paper with its other authors.

  3. 2021

    Implicit HRTF modeling

In 2021, he coauthors Implicit HRTF Modeling Using Temporal Convolutional Networks, which learns head-related transfer functions with a neural network from data captured in arbitrary, non-anechoic rooms. A perceptual study finds its binaural audio on par with traditional digital signal-processing methods.

  4. April 2024

    A Carnegie Hill concert

In April 2024, he presents a Carnegie Hill concert as Gladstone Deluxe, a New York-based artist working with percussion and electronics whose work spans recorded music, installations, and performances.

  5. April 2025

    3 Phases for Piano

In April 2025, he composes 3 Phases for Piano for Princeton Sound Kitchen's Generals Concert; Phillip Golub performs the work.

  6. April 2026

    Princeton's electronic dance festival

In April 2026, he appears among the current students joining Princeton's Electronic Dance Music Festival.

  7. September 2026

    Planes of Rhythmic Consciousness

In September 2026, he performs a 30-minute solo set for percussion and electronics called Planes of Rhythmic Consciousness as a graduate student composer.

  8. As of October 2026

    PhD candidate at Princeton

As of October 2026, he is a PhD candidate in music composition at Princeton University and a current graduate student composer. He holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and an MFA from Columbia University.
