Researcher

Giorgio Giacinto

Giorgio Giacinto is a computer engineer whose work applies machine learning to cybersecurity and malware detection. He completed a PhD in information engineering at the University of Salerno in 1999 and held researcher and associate professor posts at the University of Cagliari through 2017. He coauthored a 2013 paper on evasion in PDF malware detection. In 2015, he co-founded Pluribus One, and by 2019 he led the Computer Security unit of the Pattern Recognition and Applications Lab; he received the IAPR Fellow Award in 2021. In 2025, he coordinated a SERICS doctoral summer school and spoke about machine-learning threat detection; as of October 2026, he is a full professor at Cagliari.

Timeline

  1. 1999

    A PhD in information engineering

He earns a PhD in information engineering at the University of Salerno in 1999.

  2. 2000–2017

    Researcher and associate professor

At the University of Cagliari, he serves as a researcher from 2000 to 2004 and an associate professor from 2005 to 2017.

  3. 2013

    Evasion attacks in PDF malware

In 2013, he coauthors “Evasion Attacks against Machine Learning at Test Time,” which examines evasion attacks on classifiers and evaluates them on PDF malware detection. The study shows that these systems can be evaded.

  4. 2015–2019

    Pluribus One and PRA Lab

In 2015, he co-founds Pluribus One, a spin-off that brings PRA Lab research products to market. By 2019, he leads the lab’s Computer Security unit. His research focuses on machine learning for cybersecurity, including malware analysis and detection.

  5. 2021

    An IAPR Fellowship

In 2021, he receives the Fellow Award from the International Association for Pattern Recognition.

  6. September 2025–November 2025

A SERICS school and ICT talk

In September 2025, he coordinates the SERICS Cybersecurity Academy’s doctoral summer school at the University of Cagliari. The program covers secure AI systems and large language model vulnerabilities. In November 2025, he discusses machine learning for threat detection at Forum ICT Security in Rome.

  7. As of October 2026

    Professor at Cagliari

As of October 2026, he is a Full Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Cagliari.
