Gianni L. Vernazza

Also known as Gianni Vernazza

Gianni Vernazza is a researcher in image processing and pattern recognition whose career connected image recognition with telecommunications. He earned an electronic engineering degree at the University of Genoa in 1970 and later taught recognition methods and telecommunications in Genoa and Cagliari. In 1994, he coauthored a paper on supervised descriptions for image recognition; IAPR named him a Fellow in 2002 for contributions to image processing and pattern recognition. He led Genoa's DIBE department and Faculty of Engineering, became CNIT director in 2011, and became Professor Emeritus in December 2016. As of October 2026, he is Professor Emeritus and chairs UniGe's Committee for Research Ethics while coordinating the Collegio degli Emeriti.

    An engineering degree

    He earns a degree in electronic engineering at the University of Genoa in 1970.

  2. 1974–1994

    Recognition research at Genoa

    At the University of Genoa, he works as an assistant from 1974 to 1978 and teaches Communication Networks from 1978 to 1983. From 1983 to 1994, he serves as associate professor of Theory and Techniques of Recognition.

  3. 1994–1998

    Image recognition at Cagliari

    In 1994, he coauthors “Supervised Learning of Descriptions for Image Recognition Purposes” with Paolo Pellegretti, Fabio Roli and Sebastiano B. Serpico. From 1994 to 1998, he serves as a full professor of telecommunications at the University of Cagliari, directs its Telecommunications Group at DIEE, and chairs the university's electronics engineering degree program.

  4. 1998–2002

    Leading Genoa's DIBE

    He directs the Department of Biophysical and Electronic Engineering (DIBE) at the University of Genoa from 1998 to 2002.

  5. 2002–2008

    Engineering dean and IAPR Fellow

    He serves as dean of the University of Genoa's Faculty of Engineering from 2002 to 2008. In 2002, IAPR names him a Fellow for contributions to image processing and pattern recognition.

  6. 2011

    Directing the CNIT

    In 2011, he becomes director of CNIT, the National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications.

  7. 2016

    Professor Emeritus in Genoa

    In December 2016, he becomes a Professor Emeritus at the University of Genoa. From 2016, he is a member of the Accademia Ligure di Scienze e Lettere.

    CERA chair and emeriti coordinator

    As of October 2026, he is Professor Emeritus and chairs the University of Genoa's Committee for Research Ethics. In October 2026, he coordinates the University's Collegio degli Emeriti.
