Friedrich Pfeiffer
Friedrich Pfeiffer is a mechanical engineer and robotics researcher whose work links multibody dynamics with robot control and walking machines. He studied mechanical engineering at TH Darmstadt, built an aerospace career at Bölkow and MBB, and held TUM's mechanics chair from 1982 to 2000. His work spans biologically informed walking robots and Johnnie, a sensor-controlled biped; he shared the 1993 Körber Prize for European Science and received the 2024 Thomas K. Caughey Dynamics Medal. As of October 2026, he is an Emeritus of Excellence at TUM's Chair of Applied Mechanics.
Timeline
-
1955–1965
Mechanical engineering at Darmstadt
At TH Darmstadt, he studies general mechanical engineering from 1955 to 1961. He earns a doctorate in aerodynamics there in 1965.
-
1966–1978
Aerospace roles at Bölkow and MBB
He joins Bölkow GmbH as a development engineer in 1966. From 1970 to 1978, he leads MBB's space division and later directs its technical office.
-
1978–1982
Bayern-Chemie and MBB
From 1978 to 1980, he directs engineering at Bayern-Chemie. In 1980, he returns to MBB and leads development in the equipment division through 1982.
-
1982–2000
Professor of mechanics at TUM
In 1982, he becomes professor of mechanics at TUM's Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and holds the post until 2000.
-
1993–1995
The Körber Prize and walking robots
He shares the Körber Prize for European Science in 1993 with professors Chernousko, Cruse, and Clarac. In 1994, he coauthors the conference paper "The TUM-Walking Machine" with F. Weidemann and J. Eltze. In 1995, he coauthors "Six-legged technical walking considering biological principles" with Eltze and Weidemann.
-
2004
Sensors and control for Johnnie
In October 2004, he coauthors "Sensors and control concept of a biped robot" with Klaus Löffler, Michael Gienger, and Heinz Ulbrich. The paper describes fast sensors and a control scheme for unstructured terrain; he becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2004 for contributions to multibody dynamics and control.
-
2024
Thomas K. Caughey Dynamics Medal
He receives the Thomas K. Caughey Dynamics Medal in 2024, an award for contributions to nonlinear dynamics.
-
As of October 2026
Emeritus of Excellence at TUM
As of October 2026, he is an Emeritus of Excellence at TUM's Chair of Applied Mechanics.
