Frederick J. Damerau
Also known as Fred J. Damerau
Frederick J. Damerau was an IBM researcher in natural language processing whose work covered spelling correction, language analysis and text mining. He published a computer spelling-correction paper in 1964 and completed a Yale linguistics Ph.D. in 1966. At IBM, he worked on automatic parsing, hyphenation, question-answering research and machine-learning methods for text categorization. He coauthored a text-mining book in 2005 and died in 2009 after more than four decades of research.
Timeline
-
1964
A spelling-correction paper
In 1964, he publishes A technique for computer detection and correction of spelling errors, a paper on automatic spelling correction.
-
1966
A Yale linguistics doctorate
He completes a Yale linguistics Ph.D. dissertation titled Empirical investigation of statistically generated sentences in 1966. He later works as a researcher at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center.
-
1970–1971
Parsing, hyphenation and Markov models
His 1970 CACM article reports correct, unambiguous identification of subjects and objects for certain verbs in about half of relevant occurrences. He patents an IBM automatic hyphenation scheme in 1970. He publishes Markov Models and Linguistic Theory in 1971.
-
1978
A question-answering paper
In 1978, he publishes The Derivation of Answers from Logical Forms in a Question Answering System in the American Journal of Computational Linguistics.
-
2001–2004
Machine learning for text
A 2001 patent names him as a co-inventor of an IBM decision-tree method for text categorization. In 2004, he coauthors a benchmark study that tests linear methods and decision trees on 810,000 Reuters stories.
-
2005
A text-mining book
He coauthors Text Mining: Predictive Methods for Analyzing Unstructured Information, published in 2005. The book covers methods for searching, retrieving and analyzing unstructured natural-language text.
-
2009
More than four decades in research
After more than four decades in research, he dies in 2009.
