Frédéric Dupuis
Frédéric Dupuis is an associate professor of computer science at the Université de Montréal and a Mathlib maintainer whose research spans quantum information and formal mathematics. He defended a thesis on quantum computing at the University of Montreal in 2009, then worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Zurich, did research in Denmark, and lectured in Brno before joining CNRS's LORIA team by 2018. With Omar Fawzi and Renato Renner, he developed entropy-accumulation methods for device-independent cryptography and later formalized functional-analysis results in Lean with Mathlib collaborators. In 2024, he and Ashutosh Marwah proved a universal chain rule for a variant of smooth min-entropy that equals the conventional smooth min-entropy up to a constant.
Timeline
-
2009
A quantum computing thesis
He defends a thesis on quantum computing at the University of Montreal in 2009; it covers quantum cryptography and quantum error correction.
-
2016
The entropy accumulation theorem
In 2016, he, Omar Fawzi, and Renato Renner show that entropy accumulation can hold without assuming independent parts. Their approach yields essentially optimal security bounds for device-independent cryptography.
-
By 2018
Joining CNRS at LORIA
After his 2009 thesis, he works as a postdoctoral researcher in physics in Zurich, does computer-science research in Denmark, and serves as a university lecturer in Brno. By 2018, he is a CNRS researcher in the Loria's Mocqua team, continuing quantum information research in Nancy.
-
Since 2020
Formalizing mathematics in Lean
Since 2020, he formalizes mathematics in Lean and serves as a Mathlib maintainer.
-
2022
Functional analysis in Mathlib
With Robert Y. Lewis and Heather Macbeth, he formalizes semilinear maps in Lean's Mathlib and proves the Fréchet–Riesz representation theorem and the spectral theorem for compact self-adjoint operators.
-
2024
A universal entropy chain rule
In 2024, he and Ashutosh Marwah prove a universal chain rule for a variant of smooth min-entropy that equals the conventional smooth min-entropy up to a constant.
-
2025
A quantum protocols consortium
In 2025, he is among four Université de Montréal professors set to collaborate with the University of Ottawa on its Québec Ontario consortium on quantum protocols.
-
As of October 2026
Associate professor and Mathlib maintainer
As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the Université de Montréal and a Mathlib maintainer.
