Researcher

François Pierrot

François Pierrot is a roboticist whose research joins mechanical design and control in robotic systems. He graduated from École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay, earned a master’s in mechanical engineering at Sorbonne University, and completed a doctorate in automatic control at Montpellier. In 1992, he coauthored work on the high-speed HEXA robot; he designed the Quattro with Fatronik, and Adept’s 2007 collaboration with LIRMM and Tecnalia developed it as a fast parallel robot. He received the CNRS Innovation Medal in 2011, served as University of Montpellier vice-president for innovation and executive director of I-SITE MUSE, and became vice-president for international relations in 2023, when he also received the insignia of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. As of October 2026, he is a CNRS senior research director at LIRMM, vice-president for Global Affairs, and director of Strategic Programs at the University of Montpellier.

Timeline

  1. 1992–1995

    The high-speed HEXA robot

He graduates from École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay, earns a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Sorbonne University, and completes a doctorate in automatic control at Montpellier. In 1992, he coauthors work on the high-speed, six-degree-of-freedom HEXA parallel robot, which receives the Technical Innovation Award in 1995.

  2. 2007

    The Quattro parallel robot

He designs the Quattro, a parallel robot, with Spanish foundation Fatronik, later known as Tecnalia. In 2007, Adept Technology, LIRMM’s DEXTER team, and the Tecnalia Foundation develop it as the fastest parallel robot in the world.

  3. 2011

    A CNRS innovation medal

In 2011, he receives the first CNRS Innovation Medal.

  4. 2015–2022

    Innovation and MUSE leadership

From 2015 to 2022, he serves as vice-president for innovation and partnerships at the University of Montpellier. He also directs I-SITE MUSE as executive director from 2017 to 2022.

  5. 2023

    International relations and an honour

In March 2023, the University of Montpellier elects him vice-president for international relations. He receives the insignia of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 2023 for his work as a CNRS researcher and university vice-president.

  6. As of October 2026

    CNRS and Montpellier roles

In October 2025, he opens a University of Montpellier exhibition at UESTC as vice-president for international relations. In February 2026, he inaugurates a University of Montpellier event in the same role. As of October 2026, he is a CNRS senior research director at LIRMM, vice-president for Global Affairs, and director of Strategic Programs at the University of Montpellier; his research combines mechanical design and advanced control strategies for robotic systems.
