Etienne Barnard
Etienne Barnard is an AI researcher whose work spans neural networks, speech recognition and multilingual language technology. He completed a Carnegie Mellon PhD in 1989, patented a speech-recognition method and coauthored work on speech corpora and voice search for South African languages. At North-West University, he received the 2013 Top Technology Innovator Award and helped curate an AI research fair; he also co-founded Saigen to take speech research into production. As of October 2026, he is an Extraordinary Professor at North-West University and a co-founder and non-executive director of Saigen.
