Ernst Kussul
Also known as Ernst M. Kussul
Ernst Kussul was a computer-vision researcher whose work connected neural networks with image recognition and microassembly. He earned a PhD in 1967 and a DSc in 1982 at Kyiv's Institute of Cybernetics, worked at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Cybernetics during the 1980s, and began work at UNAM in 1998. He developed neural methods for image recognition, coauthored a 2006 paper on the LIRA classifier, and received the 2016 Premio Universidad Nacional for technological innovation and industrial design. He coordinated a neural-network research group and led ICAT's Laboratory of Micromechanics and Mechatronics through 2007, then held a permanent researcher post through April 2023 and coauthored a 2019 book on renewable-energy automation. He died in Mexico City in 2023.
