Researcher

Eric Kolve

Eric Kolve is a software engineer and AI researcher whose projects build simulated spaces for embodied agents. After software roles at Classmates, AdReady and Two Sigma, he joined AI2 and coauthored AI2-THOR. His research included RoboTHOR, ManipulaTHOR, Iconary and ProcTHOR; the ProcTHOR paper won the NeurIPS 2022 Outstanding Paper Award. He served as DexCare's director of data science and later joined Vercept as a founding engineer. Since February 2026, he is a member of technical staff at Anthropic.

Timeline

  1. 1999–2015

    Classmates, AdReady and Two Sigma

At Classmates, he starts as a principal software engineer in January 1999. He becomes a principal engineer and co-founder at AdReady in June 2006. From October 2012 to March 2015, he works as a software engineer at Two Sigma.

  2. 2015–2022

    AI2 and AI2-THOR

At AI2, he starts as a principal software engineer in April 2015 and becomes an engineering manager in January 2020, leaving in April 2022. The 2017 AI2-THOR paper, which he coauthors, presents an interactive 3D environment for visual AI research where agents navigate indoor scenes and interact with objects.

  3. 2020

    RoboTHOR simulation platform

In 2020, he coauthors RoboTHOR, a framework of simulated environments paired with physical counterparts to study simulation-to-real transfer in embodied AI.

  4. 2021

    ManipulaTHOR and Iconary

In 2021, he coauthors ManipulaTHOR, a framework for object manipulation built on the physics-enabled AI2-THOR environment. The 2021 Iconary paper, which he coauthors, is a collaborative drawing-and-guessing game that tests multimodal communication through drawings and text.

  5. 2022

    A NeurIPS Outstanding Paper

In 2022, he coauthors ProcTHOR, a framework for procedural generation of embodied AI environments that uses a sample of 10,000 generated houses to train and evaluate agents on navigation, interaction and manipulation tasks. The paper wins the NeurIPS Outstanding Paper Award.

  6. May 2022–March 2025

    Data science at DexCare

At DexCare, he becomes director of data science and data engineering in May 2022. In March 2023, he is its director of data science.

  7. March 2025–February 2026

    Founding engineer at Vercept

In March 2025, he joins Vercept as a founding engineer and holds the role through February 2026.

  8. Since February 2026

    Technical staff at Anthropic

Since February 2026, he is a member of technical staff at Anthropic.
