Ross Girshick
Ross Girshick researches object detection, visual representations and the interaction of vision and language. He received his PhD at the University of Chicago and did postdoctoral research at Berkeley. He coauthored R-CNN, first submitted in 2013 and presented at CVPR 2014, with Jeff Donahue, Trevor Darrell and Jitendra Malik. In 2015, his Fast R-CNN paper improved the efficiency of region-based detection. He received the PAMI Young Researcher Award in 2017. He later worked at Microsoft Research and FAIR.

Training in computer vision
Girshick earned a PhD at the University of Chicago and did postdoctoral work at UC Berkeley. He describes research in object recognition, localization and segmentation, along with visual representations and the connection between vision and language.

2013–2014
R-CNN for object detection
With Jeff Donahue, Trevor Darrell and Jitendra Malik, Girshick developed R-CNN. The November 2013 preprint combines region proposals with convolutional-network features to locate objects. The work appeared at CVPR 2014 and uses pretraining followed by task-specific fine-tuning.

2015
Making detection more efficient
Girshick’s Fast R-CNN paper presented a method that improved training speed, test speed and accuracy in its reported comparisons. It builds on region-based object detection with deep networks. Girshick was the sole author.

Girshick received the PAMI Young Researcher Award in 2017. He also worked at Microsoft Research in 2014–2015 and at FAIR in 2015–2023.
