Eric Fosler-Lussier
Eric Fosler-Lussier is a computer scientist at Ohio State whose research combines speech recognition, spoken-language processing, and machine learning. He earned degrees at Pennsylvania and Berkeley, conducted doctoral research at ICSI, worked at Bell Labs and Columbia, and joined Ohio State CSE in 2003. His work includes a 2005 framework for predicting speech-recognition errors and a 2012 paper on spoken-term detection with limited data; he received an NSF CAREER award in 2006. He became an ISCA Fellow in 2021 and chaired IEEE’s Speech and Language Technical Committee in 2019–2020. At Ohio State, he is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and, since 2025, Assistant Dean for Faculty Lifecycle.

Timeline
-
1993–2003
From Berkeley to Ohio State
After earning a B.A.S. in computer and cognitive science and a B.A. in linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993, he completes a computer science Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1999, with dissertation research at ICSI under Nelson Morgan. He works at Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies, from 2000 to 2002, visits Columbia University in 2003, and joins Ohio State’s Computer Science and Engineering faculty in 2003. His research brings statistical machine learning to speech and natural language processing.
-
2005
Predicting speech recognition errors
His 2005 paper “A Framework for Predicting Speech Recognition Errors” presents methods to estimate recognizer errors from transcripts and train discriminative language models.
-
2006
An NSF CAREER award
In 2006, he receives an NSF CAREER award.
-
2012
Spoken-term detection with limited data
In 2012, he coauthors “Discriminative Spoken Term Detection with Limited Data,” a paper about detecting spoken terms in low-data settings.
-
2019–2020
Chairing an IEEE speech committee
From 2019 to 2020, he chairs IEEE Signal Processing Society’s Speech and Language Technical Committee. At the end of 2020, he steps down and remains available in the committee’s past-chair role.
-
2021
An ISCA Fellowship
ISCA elects him a Fellow in 2021 for contributions to speech recognition and spoken language processing. He serves on its Advisory Council from 2021 to 2028.
-
Since 2025
Assistant dean and professor
Ohio State appoints him Assistant Dean for Faculty Lifecycle in August 2025 while he serves as CSE acting chair. He is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and the College lists him for Interfolio and faculty promotion workshops in its 2026–2027 schedule.
