Eric A. Brewer

Also known as Eric A A. Brewer

Eric A. Brewer is a computer scientist whose work spans scalable Internet services, distributed systems and cloud computing. He earned EECS degrees at UC Berkeley and MIT, co-founded Inktomi, and helped create the federal government's FirstGov.gov portal. His CAP theorem promotes deeper study of distributed data systems, and his Google work includes container management and Spanner; he received the 2009 ACM Prize in Computing, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2018, and was named a 2021 AAAS Fellow. As of October 2026, he is a professor emeritus at Berkeley and leads giant-scale systems work at Google.

Timeline

  1. 1989–1994

    Berkeley and MIT degrees

He earns a B.S. in EECS at UC Berkeley in 1989 and a Ph.D. in EECS at MIT in 1994.

  2. 1996–2003

    Inktomi and FirstGov.gov

In 1996, he co-founds Inktomi with a Berkeley graduate student from their research prototype; Yahoo! buys the company in March 2003. In 2000, he helps President Clinton create FirstGov.gov, the federal government's official portal, which launches in September 2000.

  3. 1990s

    The CAP theorem

In the late 1990s, he develops the CAP theorem to push for deeper exploration of distributed data systems.

  4. 2009

    The ACM Prize in Computing

He receives the ACM Prize in Computing in 2009 for designing highly scalable Internet services and bringing information technology to developing regions.

  5. 2014–2017

    Google's systems work

From July 2014, he works half-time at UC Berkeley while serving as a leader at Google. In 2016, he co-authors “Borg, Omega, and Kubernetes,” a review of lessons from three container-management systems. In 2017, he writes about Spanner, TrueTime and the CAP theorem, showing how Google's database combines high availability with strong consistency.

  6. 2018

    An Academy election

He is elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2018.

  7. 2021

    An AAAS fellowship

In 2021, he is named an honorary AAAS Fellow in the Information, Computing and Communication category.

  8. As of October 2026

    Giant-scale systems at Google

He is a professor emeritus in Berkeley EECS and leads work on giant-scale systems at Google, including cloud computing, scalable clusters and the CAP theorem. In 2026, he co-authors work on server hardware and software co-design for a secure, efficient cloud.
