Roy Davies

Also known as Emlyn Roy Davies

Roy Davies was a physicist and computer vision researcher whose books covered machine vision, industrial image processing and deep learning. He studied at Cardiff High School and Jesus College Oxford, earned a Physics BA in 1963 and a DPhil in 1967, and published Machine Vision: Theory, Algorithms, Practicalities in 1990. His work brought BMVA and IAPR fellowships in 2005 and 2008, and in 2019 he advised Metropolitan Police officers on collision-footage analysis. In 2021 he co-edited Advanced Methods and Deep Learning in Computer Vision as an Emeritus Professor of Machine Vision at Royal Holloway, and died in 2024.

Timeline

  1. 1963–1967

    Physics at Oxford

He attends Cardiff High School and studies at Jesus College Oxford, earning a BA in Physics in 1963 and a DPhil in 1967 for a thesis on electron and nuclear resonance in solids.

  2. 1990–2000

    Three books and a DSc

His 1990 Machine Vision: Theory, Algorithms, Practicalities becomes his best-known book among computer-vision students and researchers. He publishes Electronics, Noise and Signal Recovery in 1993, earns a DSc from the University of London in 1996, and publishes Image Processing for the Food Industry in 2000, based on machine-vision work for food inspection.

  3. 2005

    BMVA Distinguished Fellow

In 2005, the British Machine Vision Association names him a Distinguished Fellow while he serves as Professor of Machine Vision at Royal Holloway, London.

  4. 2008

    IAPR Fellowship

In 2008, IAPR names him a Fellow for contributions to machine vision theory and practice and for promoting the field through education, authorship and society activities.

  5. 2019

    A collision analysis guide

In 2019, he serves as Emeritus Professor in Royal Holloway’s Department of Physics while advising Metropolitan Police officers on collision-footage analysis. He reviews Video Analysis in Collision Reconstruction and writes its foreword.

  6. 2021

    Advanced methods and deep learning

In 2021, he co-edits Advanced Methods and Deep Learning in Computer Vision with Matthew Turk. He is Emeritus Professor of Machine Vision at Royal Holloway, University of London.

  7. 2024

    Death in 2024

    He dies in 2024.
