Researcher

Elliott J. Rouse

Elliott J. Rouse is a roboticist whose work spans AI-based control, wearable prostheses and exoskeletons. He earned engineering degrees at Ohio State and Northwestern, completed postdoctoral work at MIT’s Media Lab, and co-founded Google X’s exoskeleton development team. At Chicago’s Center for Bionic Medicine, he directed the Neurobionics Lab; his Open-Source Leg paired a shared research platform with AI-based control. He is a Senior Research Scientist at IHMC and an associate professor of mechanical engineering and robotics at the University of Michigan.

Timeline

  1. 2017

    Directing the Neurobionics Lab

In 2017, he directs the Neurobionics Lab in the Center for Bionic Medicine at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

  2. 2019

AI control for the Open-Source Leg

In June 2019, the Open-Source Leg pairs a mechanical design with AI-based control that lets a prosthesis adapt across walking, stairs and ramps. First released in 2019, its free-to-copy design offers a unified platform for bionics research.

  3. 2019–2020

    MIT and Google X

He earns a BS in mechanical engineering at Ohio State University and a PhD in biomedical engineering at Northwestern University, then joins the MIT Media Lab as a postdoctoral fellow before his visiting-faculty role at Google X from 2019 to 2020. In that role, he co-founds its exoskeleton development team.

  4. 2020

    An open-source bionic leg

He coauthors a 2020 Nature Biomedical Engineering study of an open-source robotic knee–ankle prosthesis. The study reports bench tests and walking trials with three people on level ground, ramps and stairs.

  5. 2023

    Robotics Department Faculty Award

In 2023, he receives the Robotics Department Faculty Award for serving on the Robotics Executive Committee and creating and teaching ROB 311: How to Build Robots and Make Them Move.

  6. 2024–2025

    Sabbatical at the RAI Institute

During a 2024–2025 sabbatical, he works on advanced machine design workflows at the Robotics and AI Institute.

  7. Since July 2025

    Roles at IHMC and Michigan

He joins IHMC in July 2025 as a Senior Research Scientist and is an associate professor of mechanical engineering and robotics at the University of Michigan.
