Eliza Rutherford
Eliza Rutherford is an AI researcher whose work spans language-model scaling and multimodal systems. She coauthored a Gopher analysis in 2021 and routing-network scaling laws in 2022, then joined the Flamingo team and coauthored the Chinchilla study in 2022; NeurIPS named it an Outstanding Paper. In 2023, she co-led operations on the Gemini team and led preparation of the Gemini 1.5 report in 2024. She coauthored a Gemini 2.5 report in July 2025 that introduced Gemini 2.5 Pro and Flash.
Timeline
-
2021
Gopher scaling study
In 2021, she coauthors an analysis of Transformer language models that ranges from tens of millions of parameters to Gopher, a 280-billion-parameter model.
-
2022
Routed model scaling laws
In 2022, she coauthors a study of routing networks that use a subset of their parameters per input; the study derives scaling laws linking parameter count and computation to performance.
-
2022
Flamingo visual model
In 2022, she contributes to the Flamingo team, which builds a visual-language model for image and video tasks using a handful of examples.
-
2022
Chinchilla earns an award
In 2022, she coauthors a compute-optimal training study that introduces Chinchilla, a 70B-parameter model trained with Gopher's compute budget and four times as much data. NeurIPS names the 2022 paper an Outstanding Paper.
-
2023
Co-leading Gemini operations
In 2023, she co-leads operations on the Gemini team.
-
2024
Preparing Gemini 1.5
In 2024, she leads preparation of the Gemini 1.5 report on multimodal understanding across millions of tokens of context.
-
July 2025
Gemini 2.5 report
In July 2025, she coauthors a report that introduces Gemini 2.5 Pro and Flash and covers long context, multimodal understanding, reasoning, and agentic workflows.
