Researcher

Elena Marchiori

Elena Marchiori is a machine-learning researcher whose career covered logic programs, instance selection and biomedical AI. She developed hit miss networks for selecting training examples and coauthored kernels that predict drug–target interactions. Her later work applied deep learning to wearable sensors and helped advance AI methods for breast-cancer screening. As of October 2026, she is a professor emerita at Radboud University and an ELLIS Fellow, and leads MOCIA's Work Package 2 on AI for cognitive decline.

Timeline

  1. 1994

    Concurrent constraint program proofs

She coauthors a paper on proving concurrent constraint programs correct for the 1994 ICLP workshop on verification and analysis of concurrent logic languages.

  2. 2008

Hit miss networks for instance selection

She introduces hit miss networks in 2008 as a representation of training sets and proposes three network-based algorithms for instance selection in nearest-neighbor classification.

  3. 2011

    Gaussian kernels for drug-target prediction

With Twan van Laarhoven and Sander Nabuurs, she introduces Gaussian Interaction Profile kernels and uses regularized least squares to predict drug–target interactions in 2011.

  4. 2013

    A grant for cluster analysis

She and Krzysztof Apt receive an NWO TOP grant in 2013 for a project that combines machine learning and game-theory techniques for cluster analysis.

  5. 2017

    Deep learning for wearable sensors

In 2017, she coauthors a study that uses convolutional neural networks on inertial sensor data to detect stereotypical motor movements in autism; it also tests transfer learning on longitudinal data.

  6. 2020

    MARBLE breast-cancer screening

MARBLE ends in 2020 as a four-year project to develop and validate AI algorithms for breast-cancer screening. Marchiori leads a work package on the project.

  7. As of October 2026

    Professor emerita and ELLIS Fellow

As of October 2026, she is a professor emerita at Radboud University and an ELLIS Fellow. She leads MOCIA's Work Package 2, which develops AI algorithms and scoring tools for cognitive decline and intervention response.
