Researcher

Edzard S. Gelsema

Edzard Gelsema was a physicist and medical informatics professor who worked on pattern recognition and blood-cell classification. He earned a doctorate at the University of Amsterdam in 1965, worked at CERN on bubble-chamber events, and started a pattern-recognition division at the Free University of Amsterdam, where he developed white-blood-cell classification techniques. In 1979, he coauthored a paper on multidimensional data using ISPAHAN; in 1980, he edited the Pattern Recognition in Practice proceedings and organized six workshops in the series. The IAPR named him a Fellow in 1994, and he served as its president from 1998 to March 2000. He and Backer founded Pattern Recognition Letters, and Gelsema died in March 2000.

Timeline

  1. 1937–1965

    Physics and a doctorate

Born in 1937, he is a physicist and earns a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Amsterdam in 1965.

  2. 1974

    Research at the Free University

After work on bubble-chamber events at CERN, he returns to the Netherlands in 1974 and joins the Free University of Amsterdam’s Department of Medical Informatics. He starts a pattern-recognition division there and develops techniques for classifying white blood cells.

  3. 1979

    The ISPAHAN system

In 1979, he coauthors a paper on multidimensional data using ISPAHAN, his interactive system for statistical pattern recognition.

  4. 1980

    Pattern Recognition in Practice

In 1980, he edits the Amsterdam workshop proceedings Pattern Recognition in Practice. He organizes six workshops in the series.

  5. 1988

    Professor at Erasmus University

In 1988, he moves to Erasmus University Rotterdam as a professor of medical informatics.

  6. 1992

    The Hague ICPR

He and Eric Backer serve as general chairs of the 11th International Conference on Pattern Recognition in The Hague in 1992.

  7. 1994

    An IAPR fellowship

In 1994, the IAPR names him a Fellow for contributions to pattern recognition and service to the association.

  8. 1998–March 2000

    Leading the IAPR

He becomes IAPR president in 1998 and serves until March 2000. He and Backer found Pattern Recognition Letters and serve as its editors-in-chief. He dies in March 2000.
