Edward Lockhart
Edward Lockhart is an AI researcher at Google DeepMind whose work spans speech synthesis, game-playing agents and formal mathematics. He coauthored Parallel WaveNet for faster speech synthesis, MuZero for planning in unknown games, and DeepNash for expert-level Stratego play. In 2024, he contributed to AlphaProof as the combined system with AlphaGeometry 2 reached silver-medal level at the International Mathematical Olympiad. In 2025, he co-led coordination of the Gemini Deep Think effort that achieved a gold-medal score. As of October 2026, he works at Google DeepMind in Cambridge and presents research on formal verification for AI.
Timeline
-
2017–2018
Faster neural speech synthesis
In 2017, Lockhart coauthors Parallel WaveNet, which generates high-fidelity speech more than 20 times faster than real time. At ICML in 2018, he presents Efficient Neural Audio Synthesis with the DeepMind team; its compact recurrent networks cut sampling latency while preserving audio fidelity.
-
2019–2020
Learning to plan without rules
In 2020, Lockhart coauthors DeepMind's MuZero report after the system's preliminary paper in 2019. MuZero learns a model of rewards, action choices and position value, then plans in Go, chess, shogi and Atari without being given their rules.
-
2022
DeepNash learns Stratego
The 2022 DeepNash paper includes Lockhart among its authors and combines game theory with model-free deep reinforcement learning. Through self-play, the agent learns Stratego and reaches human expert level.
-
2024
AlphaProof at the IMO
In 2024, Lockhart contributes to AlphaProof's development. Paired with AlphaGeometry 2, the system solves four of six IMO problems and reaches the silver-medal standard.
-
July 2025
Co-leading Gemini's IMO effort
In July 2025, Lockhart co-leads overall coordination of Google DeepMind's IMO effort with Thang Luong. Gemini Deep Think solves five of six problems and earns a gold-medal score.
-
As of October 2026
Research at Google DeepMind
As of October 2026, Lockhart works at Google DeepMind in Cambridge. In June 2026, he presents a talk on formal verification and proof assistants as tools for AI mathematical reasoning.
