Donald F. Specht

Also known as Donald Specht, Donald F Specht, Don Specht

Donald F. Specht was an AI researcher who introduced the probabilistic neural network and developed the general regression neural network. He earned an M.S. from Carnegie-Mellon and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford, co-founded R2 Technology for neural-network mammogram cancer detection, and spent two decades at Lockheed Martin working on space telescopes. In 2006, he co-founded MAUI Imaging with Dave Specht to develop an ultrasound system that images through and around barriers. He died in 2019.

Timeline

  1. 1990

    Probabilistic neural networks

He publishes the probabilistic neural network (PNN) in 1990, which uses Bayes probability theory and decision strategy.

  2. 1991

    The general regression neural network

He develops the general regression neural network (GRNN) and publishes his paper in 1991.

  3. By 2006

    R2 Technology and Lockheed Martin

Before MAUI Imaging’s 2006 founding, he works at an early medical ultrasound company, co-founds R2 Technology for neural-network detection of cancer in mammograms, and spends two decades as a senior scientist at Lockheed Martin working on space telescopes.

  4. 2006

    Co-founding MAUI Imaging

He holds an M.S. from Carnegie-Mellon University and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University. In 2006, he co-founds MAUI Imaging with Dave Specht to develop an ultrasound system that images through and around barriers.

  5. 2006–2013

    Multiple-aperture ultrasound

A patent with a 2006 priority date names him as an inventor of an ultrasound method that forms images using multiple apertures; the European application publishes in 2013.

  6. 2019

    Death in 2019

    He dies in 2019.
