Timeline

  1. 2013–2019

Degrees in computer science and language

She earns a bachelor's degree in computer science at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2013. At Carnegie Mellon's Language Technologies Institute, she completes a master's degree in 2015 and a doctorate in 2019. Robert Kraut and Eduard Hovy advise her doctoral work on computational social roles, which combines machine learning, sociology and social psychology.

  2. 2019–2022

    Google, Georgia Tech and Stanford

In 2019, she works as a postdoctoral researcher at Google. She joins Georgia Tech's School of Interactive Computing as an assistant professor in 2019. In 2022, she moves to Stanford's Computer Science Department.

  3. 2020

    MixText for text classification

In 2020, she coauthors MixText with Jiaao Chen and Zichao Yang. The method learns from labeled and unlabeled text, creating additional training examples by mixing text representations inside a neural network.

  4. 2022

    An NSF CAREER Award

She receives an NSF CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 2022.

  5. 2023

    Rehearsal for conflict resolution

In 2023, she coauthors Rehearsal with Omar Shaikh, Valentino Chai, Michele J. Gelfand and Michael S. Bernstein. The system uses a large language model to let people practice difficult conversations and receive feedback based on conflict resolution theory.

  6. 2024

    A Sloan research award

She receives a Sloan research award in computer science in 2024.

  7. November 2024

    CultureBank for cultural knowledge

In November 2024, she coauthors CultureBank, a knowledge base built from people's accounts of their cultures in online communities. The team uses it to assess large language models' cultural awareness and to train a model for cultural tasks.

  8. December 2024

    Collaborative Gym for human–agent teamwork

In December 2024, she coauthors the first preprint of Collaborative Gym with Yijia Shao, Vinay Samuel, Yucheng Jiang and John Yang. The framework supports communication between people and AI agents working in shared task environments. It also evaluates their collaboration.

  9. 2026

    Program chair at ICLR

In 2026, she serves as an ICLR program chair alongside Colin Raffel, Lerrel Pinto and Aleksandra Faust.

  10. 2026

    Assistant professor at Stanford

In fall 2026, she teaches Engineering AI Agents at Stanford with Michael Ryan and John Yang. She is an assistant professor in Stanford's Computer Science Department. She leads the Social and Language Technologies Lab, where she develops socially aware language technologies to support human communication.
