Dirk Groeneveld
Dirk Groeneveld is an AI engineer whose work spans open language models, multimodal AI, and tools for tracing model outputs to training data. He joined the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence in 2014 after Amazon product-description work and a startup. At AI2, he was technical lead for the AllenNLP Platform team in 2022 and coauthored OLMo, Molmo, OLMoTrace, Olmo 3, and Olmo Hybrid. He is part of Microsoft’s Superintelligence team, whose work includes AI model post-training.
Timeline
-
2014
Joining the Allen Institute
After Amazon work on product descriptions and a startup experiment, he joins the Allen Institute in 2014.
-
September 2022
Leading the AllenNLP Platform
At a September 2022 seminar, he describes himself as technical lead for the AllenNLP Platform team. The team builds general tools for AI2 researchers and works with them on projects.
-
2024
OLMo and open training data
He coauthors OLMo in 2024, a language model released with open training data plus training and evaluation code.
-
2024
Molmo and PixMo
He coauthors Molmo and PixMo in 2024. Molmo is an open vision-language model family; PixMo includes highly detailed image captions for pretraining.
-
2025
OLMoTrace and Olmo 3
In 2025, he coauthors OLMoTrace, a system that traces language-model output to matching documents in training text. In December 2025, he coauthors Olmo 3, a family of fully open language models at 7B and 32B parameter scales.
-
April 2026
Olmo Hybrid
In April 2026, he coauthors Olmo Hybrid, a 7B-parameter model with sliding-window layers replaced by Gated DeltaNet layers.
-
As of October 2026
Microsoft’s Superintelligence team
By May 2026, he is part of Microsoft’s Superintelligence team. The group works on AI model post-training, with applications in health care, energy, and AI companions.
