Dawsen Hwang

Also known as 黃道生

Dawsen Hwang is a senior software engineer at Google DeepMind in Chicago and contributes to its mathematical-reasoning work. He won silver at the 2003 International Mathematical Olympiad and gold in 2004, then earned degrees at National Taiwan University and MIT. His 2018 research studied online resource allocation under partially predictable demand. At DeepMind, he contributed to AlphaGeometry 2 and the 2025 Gemini Deep Think IMO effort, and coauthored work on olympiad benchmarks, autonomous mathematical research, and formal proof.

Timeline

  1. 2003–2004

    International Olympiad medals

He wins silver at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2003 and gold in 2004.

  2. 2008–2016

From NTU to an MIT PhD

He earns an EECS bachelor's degree at National Taiwan University in 2008, a master's degree at MIT in 2011, and an EECS PhD at MIT in 2016.

  3. 2018

    Online resource allocation

With Patrick Jaillet and Vahideh Manshadi, he proposes an online resource-allocation model that combines adversarial and stochastic arrivals in 2018.

  4. 2024

    AlphaGeometry 2 contributions

He makes key contributions to AlphaGeometry 2; AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 solve four of six 2024 IMO problems at silver-medal standard.

  5. 2025

    Gemini Deep Think and IMO-Bench

Google DeepMind names him among the leads and key contributors to its IMO 2025 team, whose Gemini Deep Think model reaches gold-medal standard. He coauthors “Towards Robust Mathematical Reasoning,” an IMO-level benchmark for mathematical reasoning in 2025.

  6. 2026

    Aletheia and LEAP

He coauthors an Aletheia study of FirstProof; the Gemini 3 Deep Think math agent solves six of ten problems by majority expert assessment. He also coauthors LEAP, an agentic framework for automated formal theorem proving with Lean, in 2026.
