Daniel J. Hulme
Daniel Hulme is an AI researcher whose work spans SAT-based optimization, enterprise AI and machine-consciousness research. He earned a master's in computer science with machine learning and a doctorate in computational complexity at UCL, founded Satalia in 2008, and coauthored a 2011 SAT-based method with Nicolas Courtois and Gregory Bard for multiplying 3×3 matrices with 23 multiplications. WPP acquired Satalia in 2021 and made him Chief AI Officer; he founded Conscium in 2024, and it introduced an AI-agent verification platform in 2025. In 2026, he funded machine-consciousness research, contributed a chapter to Perspectives on Machine Consciousness and was elected a Founding Fellow of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences. As of October 2026, he is Chief AI Officer at WPP and Founder and CEO of Conscium.
Timeline
-
2008
Founding Satalia
In 2008, he founds Satalia as an enterprise AI company. Its work combines machine learning and optimization to improve business operations.
-
2011
SAT search for matrix multiplication
With Nicolas T. Courtois and Gregory V. Bard, he coauthors a 2011 paper that applies SAT solvers to find a general 3×3 matrix-multiplication method using 23 multiplications.
-
2015
Industry chair at Digital Health
At the 2015 International Conference on Digital Health, he serves as Industry Chair and leads Satalia as its founder and CEO. His UCL degrees include a master's in computer science with machine learning and a doctorate in computational complexity.
-
2021–2025
Chief AI Officer at WPP
When WPP acquires Satalia in 2021, he becomes the group's Chief AI Officer and helps shape its AI strategy. In July 2025, he connects AI's ability to find insights in data with creative and strategic decisions.
-
2024–2025
Testing AI agents with Conscium
He founds Conscium in 2024 to develop safe AI. By June 2025, its platform tests AI agents for accuracy, responsiveness, fairness and explainability.
-
2026
Research on machine consciousness
In September 2026, he funds research into machine consciousness and contributes a chapter on his Spinning Wheel Theory to Perspectives on Machine Consciousness.
-
2026
An Academy fellowship
The Academy elects him a Founding Fellow in 2026 for contributions at the intersection of AI and applied mathematics.
-
As of October 2026
Chief AI Officer and Conscium CEO
In October 2026, he serves as Chief AI Officer at WPP and Founder and CEO of Conscium, where he presents a framework for governing AI agents across their full lifecycle.
