Clement Farabet
Clement Farabet is an AI researcher and executive whose career connects computer vision, machine-learning software and AI infrastructure. He earned an electrical engineering master's in Lyon and a doctorate on real-time image understanding at Université Paris-Est while working in Yann LeCun's NYU lab. He co-authored Torch7, co-founded MadBits, helped build Twitter Cortex, and served as NVIDIA's vice president of AI infrastructure. In April 2026, he served as a vice president at Google DeepMind and co-authored Google's announcement of Gemma 4.
Timeline
-
2008–2013
A doctorate in real-time vision
After earning an electrical engineering master's from INSA Lyon in 2008, he joins Yann LeCun's lab at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences as a research scientist. His 2013 doctorate at Université Paris-Est, co-advised by LeCun and Laurent Najman, focuses on real-time image understanding through multi-scale convolutional networks and custom deep-learning hardware.
-
2011
Torch7 for machine learning
In 2011, he co-authors Torch7, a Lua-based numeric computing framework and machine-learning library built to design and train learning systems.
-
2013–2014
Building MadBits
After completing his doctorate in 2013, he co-founds MadBits to represent, understand and connect images; Twitter acquires the company in 2014.
-
2014
Forming Twitter Cortex
After Twitter buys MadBits in 2014, he co-founds Cortex, which builds machine-learning capabilities for Twitter products such as recommendations, search and timeline ranking.
-
By 2020
AI infrastructure at NVIDIA
By 2020, he is vice president of AI infrastructure at NVIDIA and presents Project MagLev, its end-to-end platform for developing self-driving car software. He also oversees RAPIDS, a data science platform.
-
July 2025
People of AI at DeepMind
In July 2025, he appears on Google's People of AI podcast as a vice president of research at Google DeepMind. The episode follows AI's path from convolutional neural networks to transformers and agentic systems.
-
April 2026
A vice president at Google DeepMind
In April 2026, he serves as a vice president at Google DeepMind and co-authors Google's announcement of Gemma 4, an open model family built for advanced reasoning and agentic workflows.
