Researcher

Clare Bryant

Clare Bryant is Professor of Innate Immunity at Cambridge and an immunologist who used Google DeepMind’s Co-Scientist in 2026 to investigate infections that pass from animals to people. She trained in biochemistry, physiology and veterinary medicine, earned a London doctorate in 1993, and moved through Wellcome fellowships before becoming a Cambridge professor in 2013. Her research examines innate immune responses and zoonotic infection; her work has included a Cambridge GSK project on COPD and the natural-products company Polypharmakos. In 2025, she received an ERC Advanced Grant, a Wellcome Trust Discovery Award and the British Society for Immunology Outstanding Leadership Award.

Timeline

  1. 1993

    A veterinary pharmacology doctorate

After studying biochemistry and physiology at Southampton and training as a vet at the Royal Veterinary College, she earns a University of London doctorate in 1993 on the cardiovascular pharmacology of medetomidine.

  2. By 2013

    A Wellcome research fellowship

By 2013, she completes a four-year Wellcome postdoctoral fellowship at the William Harvey Research Institute with John Vane, then joins Cambridge as a Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellow.

  3. 2013–2023

    Professor of innate immunity

She becomes Professor of Innate Immunity at Cambridge in 2013, working across the Departments of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. By 2023, her research includes inflammasomes, cell-death complexes, and immune responses to pathogens that cross species.

  4. By 2025

    A GSK lung-on-chip project

By 2025, she leads a Cambridge GSK respiratory project on COPD mechanisms that uses lung-on-chip models. She helps found the natural-products company Polypharmakos, which seeks products that reduce inflammation.

  5. March 2025

    Pandemic risk programme

By March 2025, she is Co-Director of the Engineered Pandemics Risk Management Programme at the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities.

  6. 2025

    Three research honours

In 2025, she receives an ERC Advanced Grant, a Wellcome Trust Discovery Award and the British Society for Immunology Outstanding Leadership Award for research on innate immunity.

  7. May 2026

    Co-Scientist in infectious disease

In May 2026, she gives Co-Scientist a grant proposal on flu in birds and humans. The system prioritizes a protein and narrows the proposed tests to specific amino acids, which her lab explores in cell lines.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Cambridge

As of October 2026, she is Professor of Innate Immunity at the University of Cambridge, in its Departments of Veterinary Medicine and Medicine.
