Christian Borgs

Christian Borgs is a Berkeley computer scientist whose work includes neural network learning, AI for chemistry and materials, and responsible AI. He earned a PhD in mathematical physics in Munich in 1987, co-founded Microsoft Research’s Theory Group in 1997, and co-founded Microsoft Research New England in 2008. After serving as the New England lab’s deputy managing director until 2020, he moved to UC Berkeley. In 2016, he coauthored a study of learning in networks with discrete weights; in 2023, he coauthored a ChatGPT chemistry assistant that extracted synthesis data for metal-organic frameworks. As of October 2026, he is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science in Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and faculty director of the Bakar Institute of Digital Materials for the Planet.

Timeline

  1. 1987

    Training in mathematical physics

He earns a PhD in mathematical physics at the Max Planck Institute and the University of Munich in 1987. His qualifications also include a Habilitation in mathematical physics from the Free University of Berlin.

  2. By 1997

    Statistical mechanics at Leipzig

Before co-founding the Microsoft Research Theory Group in 1997, he holds the C4 chair of Statistical Mechanics at the University of Leipzig.

  3. 1997

    Founding the Theory Group

In 1997, he joins Microsoft Research as co-founder and co-director of its Theory Group.

  4. 2008–2020

    Microsoft Research New England

He co-founds Microsoft Research New England in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2008. As deputy managing director from 2008 to 2020, he helps run a lab that brings computer science and statistics together with economics and qualitative social science.

  5. 2014

    AMS and AAAS fellow

In 2014, he becomes a fellow of the American Mathematical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

  6. 2016

    Learning with discrete weights

In 2016, he coauthors “Unreasonable Effectiveness of Learning Neural Networks” with Carlo Baldassi, Jennifer Chayes and colleagues. The study examines networks with discrete weights and introduces a “robust ensemble” measure that emphasizes dense regions of solutions to guide learning algorithms.

  7. 2020

    Professor at Berkeley

He leaves Microsoft for UC Berkeley in 2020, joining the Berkeley AI Research Group (BAIR) in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences.

  8. 2023

    A ChatGPT chemistry assistant

In 2023, he coauthors “ChatGPT Chemistry Assistant for Text Mining and Prediction of MOF Synthesis” with Zhiling Zheng, Oufan Zhang, Jennifer T. Chayes and Omar M. Yaghi. The system extracts 26,257 synthesis parameters for approximately 800 metal-organic frameworks from research articles, providing data for a model that predicts crystallization outcomes.

  9. 2026

    An Eindhoven honorary doctorate

He receives an honorary doctorate from Eindhoven University of Technology in 2026 for contributions to network science, probability theory and the mathematical understanding of complex systems.

  10. As of October 2026

    Professor and BIDMaP director

As of October 2026, he is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science in UC Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and faculty director of the Bakar Institute of Digital Materials for the Planet (BIDMaP). His research includes AI for chemistry and materials science, network science, and responsible AI, including differential privacy and bias in automated decisions.
