Chi-Wing Fu

Also known as Chi Wing Fu, Philip Chi-Wing Fu

Chi-Wing Fu is a researcher whose AI work applies deep learning to 3D shapes. He earned a computer science Ph.D. at Indiana University in 2003 and joined HKUST's Image, Vision and Graphics Group in 2004. He coauthored work on 3D burr puzzles in 2011 and interlocking furniture in 2015 and 2017; PU-Net upsampled point clouds in 2018, while SP-GAN generated and manipulated them in 2021. As of October 2026, he is a professor and Vice-Chairman (Undergraduate) in CUHK's Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Associate Editor-in-Chief for regular submissions at IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications.

Timeline

  1. 2003–2004

    PhD and HKUST move

His earlier degrees include a B.Sc. and M.Phil. in computer science and engineering from CUHK. In 2003, he earns a Ph.D. in computer science from Indiana University, Bloomington. After graduation, he joins Silicon Graphics and contributes to the Beijing Planetarium digital planetarium project; in 2004, he joins HKUST's Department of Computer Science and works in the Image, Vision and Graphics Group.

  2. 2011

    Making burr puzzles

At SIGGRAPH in 2011, he coauthors “Making burr puzzles from 3D models,” a method for designing and assembling interlocking 3D puzzles with a single-key property.

  3. 2015

    Interlocking furniture assembly

In 2015, he coauthors “Computational Interlocking Furniture Assembly,” which locks groups of parts through local keys and dependencies to create globally interlocking furniture assemblies.

  4. 2017

    Reconfigurable furniture

At SIGGRAPH Asia in 2017, he coauthors “Reconfigurable Interlocking Furniture,” a method for making furniture from parts that can be assembled into different forms.

  5. 2018

    PU-Net point cloud upsampling

At CVPR in 2018, he coauthors PU-Net, a deep-network method for upsampling point clouds by learning multilevel features and expanding point sets through multibranch convolutions.

  6. 2021

    SP-GAN shape generation

In 2021, he coauthors SP-GAN, an unsupervised sphere-guided model that generates 3D shapes as point clouds and supports part-aware generation and manipulation without part annotations.

  7. 2023

Chairing the Test of Time committee

In 2023, he chairs the IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications Test of Time Award committee.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor and journal editor

At CUHK, he is a professor and Vice-Chairman (Undergraduate) in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. He also serves as Associate Editor-in-Chief for regular submissions at IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications.
