Jaron Lanier
Jaron Lanier is a researcher whose work spans commercial virtual reality and recent AI research on prompt-based virtual worlds and language-model animation. He led the National Tele-Immersion Initiative, worked on telepresence at Silicon Graphics, and joined Microsoft in 2006 before becoming a Microsoft Research scientist in 2009. He received the IEEE Lifetime Career Award in 2009 for his work on virtual reality. As of October 2026, he is Prime Unifying Scientist in Microsoft’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer.

Timeline
-
1979–1990
VPL and early research roles
From 1979 to 1980, he is a student researcher on an NSF-funded project on digital graphical simulations for learning at New Mexico State University. He develops video games independently from 1980 to 1983 and works as a researcher at Atari Labs from 1983 to 1984. He founds VPL Research, the first company to sell VR products, in the early 1980s and serves as its CEO from 1984 to 1990; he leads its team in developing multi-person virtual worlds in the late 1980s.
-
1997–2001
Leading tele-immersion research
He leads the National Tele-Immersion Initiative from 1997 to 2001. In 1998, EVL works with the initiative to help users in different locations collaborate in shared virtual environments. The initiative demonstrates its first tele-immersion prototypes in 2000.
-
2001–2004
Developing telepresence at Silicon Graphics
From 2001 to 2004, he is a visiting scientist at Silicon Graphics and develops solutions to core problems in telepresence and tele-immersion.
-
2006–2009
Microsoft research and an IEEE award
He joins Microsoft as a Scholar at Large in 2006. In 2009, he becomes an Interdisciplinary Scientist at Microsoft Research and receives the IEEE Lifetime Career Award for contributions to virtual reality.
-
2010–2011
Innovator in Residence at USC
He serves as USC Annenberg School Innovator in Residence from 2010 to 2011.
-
2022
Prompt-based virtual worlds
In 2022, he coauthors “Steps towards prompt-based creation of virtual worlds.” The paper shows that prompts can speed in-VR level editing.
-
2023
Language-model animation control
In 2023, he coauthors a method for real-time animation control and generation on rigged models with natural-language input. The method embeds a large language model in Unity to output structured text that can be parsed into animations.
-
As of October 2026
Microsoft’s Prime Unifying Scientist
As of October 2026, he is Prime Unifying Scientist in Microsoft’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer. In May 2026, he discusses AI safety and the future economy at the Foresight Institute.
