Researcher

Chi Hau Chen

Chi Hau Chen is Chancellor Professor Emeritus at UMass Dartmouth, where he works in statistical pattern recognition, signal processing, computer vision and machine learning. He earned degrees at National Taiwan University, the University of Tennessee and Purdue, joined UMass Dartmouth in 1968, and edited a workshop volume on pattern recognition and artificial intelligence in 1976. He advised a 1986 master's thesis on underwater transients and exploration seismic data, became an IEEE Fellow in 1988, and became an IAPR Fellow in 1996. In 2025, he edited a book about pattern recognition and computer vision in the AI era.

    Editing an AI workshop volume

He edits proceedings from the joint workshop on pattern recognition and artificial intelligence, held at Hyannis, Massachusetts, in June 1976.

  4. 1986

    A thesis on underwater signals

He advises a UMass Dartmouth master's thesis on pattern analysis of underwater transients and exploration seismic data in 1986.

  5. 1988

    An IEEE Fellowship

He becomes an IEEE Fellow in 1988.

  6. 1996

    An IAPR Fellowship

IAPR names him a Fellow in 1996 for contributions to pattern recognition and its applications to geophysical and underwater-acoustics problems.

  7. Since 2010

    Emeritus and series editor

He becomes Chancellor Professor Emeritus in June 2010 at UMass Dartmouth and serves as the Computer Vision Series Editor for World Scientific Publishing. In 2025, he edits Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision in the New AI Era, a book covering deep-learning and other AI applications in pattern recognition and computer vision.
