Charles Sutton
Also known as Charles A. Sutton
Charles Sutton is a machine-learning researcher whose work links natural language processing, software engineering and program synthesis. He earned a BA in computer science and philosophy at St Mary’s College of Maryland and completed a computer science PhD at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2008, with a thesis on conditional random fields for language processing. After a Berkeley postdoc, he held academic posts at Edinburgh, directed its EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Data Science, and became a Faculty Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute in 2016. He joined Google in 2018 and was among the people Google Research thanked for ML-enhanced code-completion work; in 2022, tests found a 6% reduction in coding iteration time for single-line ML completion. His source-code language-model paper won the 2023 MSR Most Influential Paper award, and in 2025 he coauthored a paper on natural-language outlines for code; as of October 2026, he is a Research Scientist at Google Research.

Timeline
-
1999–2008
A PhD on conditional random fields
He earns a BA in computer science and philosophy at St Mary’s College of Maryland in 1999 and a computer science PhD at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2008. His thesis studies efficient training methods for conditional random fields in natural language processing.
-
2007–2022
Academic and leadership roles
He works as a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley from 2007 to 2009, then becomes Lecturer in Machine Learning at Edinburgh’s School of Informatics from 2009 to 2014. In 2014, he becomes a Reader there, holding the post through 2022. In March 2016, he becomes Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Data Science; in September 2016, he is named a Faculty Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute.
-
2018
Joining Google
He joins Google in January 2018, with research interests spanning deep learning, probabilistic machine learning, programming languages, data mining, and software engineering.
-
July 2022
Code-completion work credit
In July 2022, he is among the people Google Research thanks for its ML-enhanced code-completion work.
-
2022
Code-completion productivity tests
In 2022, tests compare Google’s hybrid semantic ML code completion with a control group across eight programming languages and more than 10,000 developers; single-line ML completion reduces coding iteration time by 6%.
-
2023
A source-code language-model award
In 2023, he coauthors “Mining source code repositories at massive scale using language modeling” with Miltiadis Allamanis. MSR names the paper Most Influential Paper for its use of large-scale language models on source code.
-
2025
Natural-language outlines for code
In 2025, he coauthors “Natural Language Outlines for Code: Literate Programming in the LLM Era,” which proposes natural-language outlines that summarize code for developers.
-
As of October 2026
Research Scientist at Google Research
As of October 2026, he is a Research Scientist at Google Research. His machine-learning work spans natural language processing, analysis of computer systems, software engineering, and program synthesis.
