Researcher

Bryce Harrop

Also known as Bryce E. Harrop

Bryce Harrop is an Earth Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and leads E3SM's Water Cycle Changes and Impacts Group. He completed a PhD in 2016 on atmospheric cloud radiative effects and tropical convection, then contributed to E3SM's Atmosphere Group in May 2018. In 2022, he coauthored a study on calibration of E3SM's cloud parameterizations and subgrid effects. He coauthored the 2023 ClimSim dataset for hybrid physics-ML research and a 2024 machine-learning bias-correction study for E3SM. He coauthored 2025 research on North American heatwave and wildfire risks and a 2026 study on Arctic moisture intrusions.

Timeline

  1. 2016

    A PhD on tropical clouds

He completes a PhD in 2016 with a dissertation on the nature of the atmospheric cloud radiative effect and its impact on tropical convection.

  2. May 2018

    Contributing to E3SM

In May 2018, he is one of PNNL's primary contributors to the Atmosphere Group for the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM).

  3. 2022

    Calibrating E3SM cloud physics

In 2022, he coauthors a study showing that better calibration of cloud parameterizations and subgrid effects increases the fidelity of the E3SM Atmosphere Model version 1.

  4. 2023

    ClimSim and a NeurIPS award

He coauthors ClimSim, a multi-scale dataset for hybrid physics-ML research with 5.7 billion pairs of multivariate input and output vectors. The paper receives a 2023 NeurIPS Outstanding Paper award.

  5. 2024

    Machine-learning bias correction

In 2024, he coauthors a paper on machine-learning bias correction of the large-scale environment of high-impact weather systems in the E3SM Atmosphere Model.

  6. 2025

North America heatwave and wildfire risks

In 2025, he coauthors a study showing how an eastward-shifting boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation amplifies North American heatwave and wildfire risks in a warming climate.

  7. 2026

    Arctic moisture intrusions

In 2026, he coauthors a study on model-observation discrepancies in Arctic moisture intrusions and pathways for improved simulation.

  8. As of October 2026

    Earth Scientist and group lead

As of October 2026, he is an Earth Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and leads E3SM's Water Cycle Changes and Impacts Group in Phase 3.
